In this Sept. 28, 2012 photo, Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown speaks during an interview in Portland, Ore. The sudden advent of an openly bisexual governor in Oregon may provide a chance to broaden understanding of America's bi community.

NEW YORK (AP) — "LGBT" has become a household term amid sweeping advances for gay rights, and yet the "B'' sometimes seems like an awkward fit. The sudden advent of America's first openly bisexual governor may provide a chance to ease the awkwardness and broaden understanding of the bi community.

Kate Brown, Oregon's secretary of state, is in line to replace Democratic Gov. John Kitzhaber when he steps down Wednesday amid an ethics scandal. Brown, serving her second term after many years in the legislature, lives in Portland with her husband and two stepchildren and has been open throughout her political career about being bisexual.

Her progress has been followed closely by bisexual activists across the country, including Ellyn Ruthstrom, who now serves on the board of Boston-based Bisexual Resource Center after 10 years as its president.

"There are so few bi political leaders out there, so we pay attention to them," said Ruthstrom, citing U.S. Rep. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona as the other prominent example.

Beyond elective politics, the bi community continues to struggle to establish its appropriate place in the broader civil rights campaigns being waged on behalf of lesbians, gays and transgender people.

Within that movement, there was widespread animosity toward bisexuals a couple of decades ago, Ruthstrom said. "Now it's not as overt, but there are still issues."

She cited a phenomenon known as "bi-erasure" — in which bisexuals are not mentioned in speeches, press releases and news reports that refer to the LGT groups.

Ruthstrom said she and her allies have been lobbying major LGBT-rights groups to be fully inclusive of the bisexual community's issues. "They're missing an opportunity to engage," she said, citing research indicating that bisexuals make up about half of the total LGBT population.

Gary Gates, a demographer at the UCLA School of Law's Williams Institute, estimated in 2011 that about 1.8 percent of the adult population, or a little more than 4 million Americans, identifies as bisexual — slightly more than the number identifying as gay or lesbian.

However, Ruthstrom said a majority of bisexuals remain wary of disclosing their sexual orientation, except perhaps to a few close acquaintances, and suffer high rates of depression. A study released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention two years ago said bisexual women reported a far higher rate of rape, violence and stalking by an intimate partner than either lesbians or heterosexual women.

A vice president of one of the largest LGBT-rights groups, Fred Sainz of the Human Rights Campaign, said bisexuals may in some respects face greater challenges than gays and lesbians.

"To the extent that they're out, they may well be more so the victims of scorn because they get it from both gay and straight people," Sainz said. "Gays want them to make a choice, and straights consider them gay, so in many ways they face increased amounts of stigma and discrimination."

The Human Rights Campaign's legal director, Sarah Warbelow, who is bisexual, said one of the biggest challenges for the bi community is a lack of public understanding of their social lives.

"On one hand, there's assumption that bi people are never happy in any relationship and need to have multiple partners," she said. "On the other hand, you've got people who say it's not real — it's an in-between existence until you figure out who you really are when you grow up."

Brown's pathway to the governor's office opened up as the Human Rights Campaign was convening a conference in Portland devoted to supporting LGBT youth.

"Kate Brown is an incredible role model for bisexual youth, many of whom are grappling with the same issues that Brown dealt with when she came out in the '90s — including feelings of not being understood by family or by their gay peers," said Ellen Kahn, an HRC official helping organize the conference.

Efforts to increase understanding have persisted over many years,

In 2009, for example, activists convened a "Putting the 'B' in LGBT" summit in New York City. In September 2013, the White House convened a meeting with more than 30 bisexual activists — the first such gathering of its kind.

Kate Brown, after entering politics in 1991 as a member of Oregon's House of Representatives, wrote a brief essay for "Out and Elected in the USA" about what it was like for her to come out as bisexual to her parents, her gay and straight friends, and her fellow lawmakers.

Her parents' response: "It would be much easier for us if you were a lesbian." Some gay friends called her "half queer."

"Some days I feel like I have a foot in both worlds, yet never really belonging to either," Brown concluded.

"[Half-Queer] Kate Brown is an incredible role model for bisexual youth..."

Now there's a term (and sentence) we never thought we'd hear in our lifetime.

What does "half-queer" even mean? That the freak "is open-minded to opening (or engaging 'Recepticle Mode') every orifice available"?

Behold: "An incredible role model."

The Powers That Run Things must have decided somewhere along the line that "progressivism" is much easier for the hicks and rubes to stomach if we're "eased" in to it.

I object to the phrase, "easing in to" in any queer context ;-)

But yes, the progressives insidious method of systematic brainwashing is definitely a matter of practicing incrementalism. By 2020, some scruffy, balding state Governor will proudly parade his 11 year old "husband" up to the podium, chastising "all the haters."

So the first "person of color" to be (s)elected POTUS is actually just a "half-black". (He is a Communist, though, so they hit a home-run with that one)

HA! AND a half-Muzzie (he's supposedly a "Christian" as well) AND a full-fledged Quisling. By jove, I think we've hit a Grand Slam there, Olde Bean!

(side note: Mark Levin asks "how do we know this - do we know the sexual orientation of EVERY previous governor?")

Good question. ANSWER: ONLY if the orientation was considered a "Mental Illness" by the APA before 1973.

Oh well . . . baby steps. You gotta take baby steps.

No queer is qualified to hold any office.

Damn shame you weren't around to tell that to George Washington, who hired a homosexual Prussian General to write the training doctrine for the Continental Army, and to write the manual to establish health standards and hygiene at camps that put the Continental Army back on it's feet after so many of them had been down with diseases.

Also a damn shame you weren't around to tell the Greeks that the Alexander homo guy wasn't fit to lead the Greek Army before he conquered most of the known world.

So,if you had a homosexual brother or sister and you and your wife were killed in some sort of accident, you would rather have your children put up for adoption by strangers than raised by your brother or sister?

A church member who is an unrepentant homosexual (meaning they are practicing), would be asked to leave the church. Once in communion with God they would be able to come back.

Pete probably thinks it should be illegal to not hire a queer to be a preacher.

WRONG!

Your/your Church right to hire whoever you want to hire and to NOT hire who you don't want to hire trumps the rights of any individual to have any job you are offering.

Unless of course your wish comes true and your church becomes a branch of government with the power to dictate to the rest of us. In that case you would have to hire anybody that applies for a job opening. INDIVIDUALS and private organizations have a right to discriminate if they wish, the government doesn't. BTW,your (the collective "you" that makes you a sheep in your flock) clouds the issue with your government tax-free status to provide charity to the needy. That qualifies you as a quasi-governmental agency. I can see a valid argument being made that states this would require your church to comply with all state and feral regulations on hiring, firing, and promotions. Start paying your taxes and I'm on your side when it comes to hiring whoever you want,or helping whoever you want. Or not.

Hey Pete have you ever had the urge to rape someone? Me neither. We need the government to pass a law to make it legal. It is obvious they are born that way.

Hey Peter. Ever get the urge to kill someone. What you did? Me too. But did you ever act on it? Me neither. So we need the government to get rid of laws against murder too. It's in that cult book the Bible. People are born that way. It's not their fault they are born that way.

Hey Pete you ever get the urge to do it with an animal? Gross huh. But some people are born that way. It shouldn't be illegal right?

MOST of us are sane enough to not equate homosexuality with actual crimes, and as a Christian you are being incredibly hypocritical to condemn them for their sexual orientation.

ROFLMAO! Even if you told him it was acceptable behavior,if he is a child it will still freak him out or embarrass him. Children aren't emotionally equipped to deal with that sort of thing. They have no sexual urges, and don't understand what is going on.

YOur acceptance of deviancy is not science.

MY "acceptance" of it? WTF died and made ME God? It is not for me to accept or approve of since it has nothing to do with me.

My only concern is that ALL Americans be treated equally under the law,and that we all have the same rights when it comes to the laws of the land.

Why is democracy held in such high esteem when it’s the enemy of the minority and makes all rights relative to the dictates of the majority? (Ron Paul,2012)

You said something intelligent.

But by you supporting the Federal Leviathan being able to change the meaning of words. You are supporting the sowing of seeds that will force children to know about freaks.

So Mike Tyson should be able to represent us in the U.S. Olympics womans boxing team?

If not you are not consistent.

Proving you carve out special exemptions for your fag faction.

Don't bother me anymore with your homosexual obsession. You have no intention of discussing anything or even applying reason or common sense to any reply. All you want to do is rant and rave and preach your insanity.

What I want is for all American citizens to be treated equally by the government.

Showed you to be a clueless inconsistent hypocrite.

I understand why you feel defeated.

Checkmate.
