Title: Insanity 2016 Rant: Same Bullsh*t, Different Puppet Election

The definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

We’re sorry, but we’re sick of people trying to lie to you and assure you that your vote for ANYONE in the presidential bread and circuses dog and pony show coming up in 2016 is going to matter in the slightest itty bitty teensy weensy little bit. Both sides of the carpet are corrupt and the entire system is not just broken, but irrevocably so.

Nevertheless, we’ve heard people waxing all optimistic on the false choices you’ll be advertised — you know, freedom, The Constitution, and stuff — but this rosy picture requires NOT looking at the man behind the curtain pulling the same old levers on the rusty ass stage play we’re sold every four years in this country and have been for decades now.

Please. There’s no point in getting your hopes up at these savior illusions. Stop looking for a leader in Washington. We haven’t had one for over 50 years. The last one this country even tried to have was murdered.

NONE of the scum that rises to the top of the septic lagoon that currently serves as modern American politics is going to “save the Republic” or give a crap about the Constitution because ALL OF THEM are sold out puppets to the banks and megacorporations — WITHOUT exception. Period. NONE. No one. None of them. None.

I feel like I need to type it one more time. N-O-N-E.

Reforming our American system requires mitigating its influence over how Individuals, and communities of Individuals, meet the requirements illustrated by Maslow's hierarchy of needs:

Got LOCAL Aquaponics?

Local aquaponics is high tech.

Why not just grow plants in the ground?

Why not just grow plants in the ground?

Because the ground freezes and I'm harvesting strawberries, kale, leeks, and herbs in a (mostly) solar powered green house at 7000 feet in Colorado, in January.

Among other things, the water my fishes live in provides a heat sync to keep the greenhouse warm.

Not really that "high tech". A couple of pumps, temperature sensor, controller. The "tech" part is largely open-source and is increasingly accessible to common folks.

Well, then, that makes perfect sense. I'm surprised that the strawberries, kale, leeks and herbs don't drown.

Only the roots are in the water, the rest of the plant grows like a normal plant would.

I figured. I'm surprised that a plant with its roots submerged in water doesn't drown. Trees stick up in the air, but if their root systems are continually soaked, they drown.

I use a flood and drain cycle where the roots are only submerged every half hour.

Fascinating.

And the rest of the time they are exposed to the air?

Yep.

I have two different setups running.

One is a tray filled about 6" deep with baked clay spheres.

The other is an array of 4" PVC tubes with holes into which "net-pots" are placed:

Basil sprouting in a net-pot filled with clay pebbles.

The fish are in a 100 gallon rubbermaid livestock watering container. Water is pumped out of the fish tank, through the two grow systems, and then flows back into the fish tank.

The PCV tubes work well for plants that don't create extensive root systems. Kale, Leaks, Strawberry's, Swiss Chard all work well in there.

Tomatoes, not so much. They produced roots that filled several feet of the 4" pipes and plugged them up.

Tomatoes work better in the tray filled with clay grow media. I have to be careful not to let the dead leaves break down and get pumped into the fish tank... since tomatoes are a member of the night shade family and eating the leaves will/have put fish to sleep, permanently.

The tray filled with clay grow media is more versatile and less of a hassle to care for than the PVC. This spring I will probably rework the system to have less pvc, two hundred gallons more water, and additional trays with the clay grow media.

Is there something you put into the water, some sort of fertilizer or nutrients? Or is it just water?

Do you use UV lights/sunlamps?

Fish poop. Aquaponics is the merger of Hydroponics (which typically requires chemicals and fertilizer added to the water... which eventually becomes polluted and must be replaced) and Aquaculture (which is the farming of fish - whose waste typically pollutes the water... which everntualy must be replaced).

So in Aquaponics, the plants use the fish poop and clean the water in a closed cycle.

Do you use UV lights/sunlamps?

No, the greenhouse faces South and all the light is natural.

What kind of fish? How many?

This is really fascinating to me. I'm unlikely to ever do it (I'm a conservative seeds-in-the-mud sort of guy), but I find it intriguing.

Can you adjust the nutrient content in the plants (say, Iodine, or the Holy Grail of botany: Vitamin B-12, based on what you feed the fish?

Tilapia?

Goldfish. I'm cheap and not much of a fish eater.

Started out with inch long 12cent feeder goldfish to prove the system. Now they're all 6+ inches a couple of years later.
