DES MOINES, Iowa — Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) delivered a fiery speech in Iowa on Saturday, wowing the conservative crowd with a passionate argument for small government and his own lengthy resume.

The Wisconsin governor, in rolled-up shirtsleeves, paced the stage as he blasted big government and touted a long list of conservative reforms he's pushed through in blue Wisconsin. The governor also showed a rhetorical flourish that's largely been absent from his previous campaigns, drawing the crowd to its feet multiple times.

"There's a reason we take a day off to celebrate the 4th of July and not the 15th of April," he said, almost yelling as his voice grew hoarse. "Because in America we value our independence from the government, not our dependence on it."

Walker's speech had something for every element of the activist crowd. The governor touted his three victories over Democrats and recall win as well as his state-level education reforms. Each new policy he helped pass drew cheers: Voter ID laws, education reforms, tax cuts and defunding Planned Parenthood.

The biggest question for Walker as he ramps up for a race is whether he has the fire in the belly and political skills to stand onstage against the other candidates. And in his first major Iowa address, he may have done a lot to dispel notions that he lacks charisma.

When he said he won reelection as Milwaukee County Executive in an area where President Obama won by a two-to-one margin, some in the audience gasped.

"If you get the job done the voters will actually stand up with you," he said before contrasting his record with Washington's deadlock.

The preacher's son also showed a personal side — and spoke in religious terms to thank Iowans who prayed for him as he faced death threats during his fight against the public sector unions, including one that promised to gut his wife "like a deer."

Walker made sure to establish his Iowa roots — saying he'd lived there until third grade until his father got a job as a minister in Wisconsin — before promising to return "many more times in the future."

Cruz is still at the top of my list, but Walker is looking good so far to me. I will keep watching him, as I will all others.

I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. On the other hand, if same-sex marriage becomes the norm, laws permit it and there is nothing I can do about it….then there is nothing I can do about it. However, I will then say that a man should have as many wives as he wants and a woman should have as many husbands as she wants.

Walker opposes abortion and he supported the gay marriage ban as a legislator before he became governor. When asked about gay marriage lately, he says that his opinion doesn't matter because a governor can't change the constitution. That can mean a couple of different things.

If Walker has arrived at the conclusion that it is a fight he cannot win and wants to concentrate his fire power on things he can do and changes he can make, then I can live with that. I can live with that because there will be no candidate with whom I will agree one hundred percent….I simply will search out the one I agree with the most on and support him. I don’t say “or her” because I don’t see Carly having any chance at all….but she should make some good contributions to the debates.

In the end, I will support the Republican nominee to WIN over Hillary. If anyone wants to call me a shithead voting for the lesser of two evils, then they can do so. If a donkey were the Republican nominee, I would vote for it to keep Hillary out. At least I would have made effort to have a Republican “jack” in the white house and not a Democrat “jenny.” For you city slickers, a jack is a male donkey and a jenny is a female donkey.

Zero and his politburo have "fundamentally tranformed" the country beyond recognition - so I wonder if there's any more damage than Hil-liar-y can do.

You got that right, Gatlin. But I would rather a candidate talk more about their plans, if they have any, of reversing the damage, actually talk about eliminating the poison pen executive mandates and laws, and change the course these traitors have set. I too am leaning towards, Walker. jmho!
