Title: Report: Last Words Heard on Crashed AirAsia Flight Were ‘Allahuakhbar, Allahuakhbar’

Following the recovery of the two “black boxes” aboard the crashed AirAsia Flight QZ8501, a story on Yahoo! News reports that “Allahuakhbar, Allahuakhbar were the last words [the pilots] said before they died.”

AirAsia Flight QZ8501, a flight out of Surabaya, Indonesia and bound for Singapore, took off early Sunday December 28, 2014 in what can only be described as violent weather. The pilots, amidst the storm, radioed in, asking air traffic control for permission to turn left and climb to a higher altitude to avert the storm. A little while later, the plane crashed into the Java Sea, taking the lives of all 162 of its crew and passengers on board.

Search teams began looking for traces of the aircraft upon discovering that it was missing, only to find debris and several bodies floating 60 to 120 miles from the aircraft’s last known location over the Java Sea. Of the 162 people on board, only 48 bodies have been recovered so far.

Soon after, the international search efforts continued, and according to Fox News, “three Indonesian ships detected two strong pings being emitted from their beacons, about 22 yards apart.” The strong currents and large waves hindered divers' efforts throughout the 17-day search, “but they took advantage of calmer early morning conditions on both days to extract the instruments.”

Nurcahyo Utomo, a two decade old investigator who knew the pilot personally, had this to say about the recordings that were recovered from the wreckage:

“Listening to the playback of a black box involved in a crash is not like listening to music or a discussion.

“We are listening to a recording that represents the last moments before the crash and it is disturbing. There are times where the investigators would get unnerved listening to the recording.”

In analyzing the recordings and listening to the last words of the pilots, words like “Allahuakhbar” being repeatedly stated, the investigators got goose bumps.

“It is as if we can feel them... Allahuakhbar, Allahuakhbar were the last words said before they died,” said Nucahyo.

As of this moment, it is unclear what the pilots intended when uttering a phrase often associated with radical Islamic terrorists, many of whom have uttered the phrase before committing their heinous acts of terror: “Allahuakhbar, Allahuakhbar.”

Perhaps, in repeating “Allahuakhbar,” a phrase that literally means “god is the greatest,” the pilots were merely calling out to their god in a time of great peril – a moment that they believed would be their last.

One thing is for sure, hearing these final words, this last conversation, is key to revealing what caused the AirAsia flight to crash.

"We will know what really happened from the conversations between pilot and co- pilot prior to the crash,” said Nucahyo.

And certainly, listening to and analyzing the recordings of the last moments of Flight QZ8501 will be a tough thing to do for Captain Iriyanto, a junior to the pilot who died on board the downed plane.

There was some sort of crash in 1993 or so that had a similar ending. I think it was off California. There were bunches of military types on board - mostly Middle Eastern.

Some one will confirm or deny this. I'm going by memory.

Egypt Air 990 off the US East Coast in 98 I believe. About an hour into the flight with cruise established, the co-pilot got out of the flight deck to use the bathroom and galley. That's when Captain El-Boututy shut down both engines, nosed it over and screamed allah-gallah all the way down to the drink. The Egyptian government refused to accept te NTSB findings calling it all an infidel plot. I note with interest that this flight went down an hour into the flight. Same with MH350.

Not so. CNN is reporting that it was more like olly olly oxen free or allenisatthebar or ollawhakabar which in Malaysian means, God damn, the peanuts are stale again.

The people involved seem to easily revert to a familiar reflexive use of islamic language in their last moments that is often use to celibrate a victorious death in the name of jihad. I wonder if that should be telling us something.

People tend to plead with their god when death is imminent.

Muslims have this saying and use it on all occasions.

Christians tend to say "Oh, God".

Atheists also say "Oh, God" but are only believers at moments of maximum intimacy.

It makes you wonder about the ones who scream "Oh, Shit."

"Some people march to a different drummer — and some people polka."

There was a case in Italy where a Muslim pilot was brought up on charges - and if I remember correctly, convicted - for praying during an emergency landing (plane may have crashed) - this was seen as the crime of criminal neglect because he was praying outloud rather than tending to his piloting duties.

Found the story: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2009/mar/25/tunisian-plane- crash-pilot-prayed

Tunisian pilot who prayed as his plane went down jailed in Italy

A pilot accused of praying when he should have been taking emergency measures to avoid a crash in which 16 people died has been sentenced to 10 years in jail by an Italian court.

Captain Chafik Gharby was at the controls of a plane belonging to the Tunisian charter airline Tuninter that crashed in the sea off the coast of Sicily four years ago. The 23 survivors were left swimming for their lives, some clinging to a piece of the fuselage that stayed afloat after the turbo-prop aircraft broke up on impact.

Gharby was at first hailed as a hero for having saved the lives of most of the passengers. But after an investigation, he, his co-pilot, and several Tuninter executives and technicians were charged with a range of offences including manslaughter.

The court in Palermo agreed with prosecutors that the chain of events that led to the crash began when a wrong part was installed in the ill-fated plane, a Franco-Italian ATR 72. A mechanic accidentally fitted an outwardly identical fuel gauge intended for the smaller ATR 42.

The plane took off from Bari, bound for the Tunisian island of Djerba, on 6 August 2005. As it flew over Sicily, its engines slowed to a halt, even though the instrument panel showed the aircraft had enough fuel left for the flight.

The judges accepted the prosecution case that the pilots, instead of making a crash landing on the sea, should have been able to glide the plane to Palermo airport. Instead, Gharby was said to have panicked. In cockpit recordings entered as evidence he was heard calling for the help of "Allah and Muhammad his prophet".

I believe I read that the pilot had requested an altitude change because of violent weather, but was denied because of other traffic in the vicinity. No matter what is found from the black boxes, there will be those who will believe only what they want.

Included in the passenger manifest were 33 Egyptian military officers returning from a training exercise; among them were two Brigadier-Generals, a Colonel, a Major, and four other air force officers. After the crash, newspapers in Cairo were prevented by censors from reporting the officers' presence on the flight.

Yes, thank you, that was the flight I was thinking of.

From my link just above:

The cockpit voice recorder (CVR) recorded the Captain excusing himself to go to the lavatory, followed thirty seconds later by the First Officer saying in Egyptian Arabic "Tawkalt ala Allah," which translates to "I rely on God." A minute later, the autopilot was disengaged, immediately followed by the First Officer again saying, "I rely on God." Three seconds later, the throttles for both engines were reduced to idle, and both elevators were moved three degrees nose down. The First Officer repeated "I rely on God" seven more times before the Captain suddenly asked repeatedly, "What's happening, what's happening?"
