Porcupine Stands in for Marmot on Groundhog Day

By KTUU News Staff Channel 2 News

12:16 p.m. AKST, February 3, 2013 PORTAGE, Alaska—

Thanks to the Alaska State Legislature, Alaska celebrates Marmot Day on February 2, which is the Alaska version of Groundhog Day.

This year, Snickers, a porcupine, stood in for Alaska’s furry ground squirrel at a celebration in Portage at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.

AWWC says, like his Punxsutawney cousin, the "prickly favorite" did not see his shadow, which means an early spring.

Sen. Linda Menard, R-Wasilla, sponsored the bill in 2009 and former Governor Sarah Palin signed Marmot Day into law and it became an Alaskan tradition with the first celebration in 2010.

I saw a pic of the wh moocher hovering around the groundhogs home, and said to a friend of mine, 'if he sees her face, that groundhog ain't never comin' out'...

btw, why was the groundhog replaced?

It depends upon where you are; the North Slope, the interior or Southeast. It can range anywhere from March to June.

I am soooo ready for Spring, I'm looking out my window here, we're covered in snow, it's just 30 degrees...but it feels colder.

I don't know. I've never seen anything besides red squirrels, porcupines, ermine and snowshoe hare at this time of year. It'll be late April or May before the marmots/woodchucks/ground squirrels emerge from their dens.

it's just 30 degrees.

Same as it is here where I am in Alaska. We've had very little snow this year compared to the previous two. Maybe a foot on the ground. We had 3 inches of rain one day in January.

Back in late 2005/06, the temp hovered at 0-5 below, for weeks, coldest I remember, don't know if Fred would remember this or not?
