A worker at the Dollar General Store in Wrightsville was arrested Thursday and charged with spanking a customer's child with a belt. Wrightsville Police Chief Paul Sterling said he had never encountered a case like this before. Sterling says he and an investigator went to the Dollar General Store after receiving a call from the child's father that his son had been spanked by a store worker with a belt. Apparently, the 8-year-old boy was running around the store and got into a confrontation with 39-year-old Emilia Graciela Bell. Bell told investigators the boy threw a cookie at her and that's when she removed her belt, chased the boy down and spanked him behind the counter. The boy's mother and sister, who were also in the store, did not witness the spanking, according to the chief. The chief says Bell was immediately arrested and admitted to investigators what she did. Sterling said after consulting with other law enforcement leaders, they charged Bell with simple battery. She was taken to jail and released on bond Friday morning, he said

So a litle kid gets out of control and thows a cookie. You want to beat the father. That is unreasonable. The reasonable solution would be to tell the father that he is going to pay for the cookies. Just because your kid gets out of line doesn't necessarily mean you are a bad parent. Maybe they were bad parents maybe they weren't. One incident doesn't confirm one way or the other.

Because you would have been the employee of the Dollar store and it would have been your responsibility with the job you took.
When I was a new 7 Eleven clerk right after high school I would have an occasional aquaintance from school try to buy beer from me and would always refuse. One bubba who didn't like this came in later after being spurned and held up a penny candy saying, "This costs one cent, right? He then bounced it off the counter hoping my eyes would track it so he could attack with me with attention diverted. We did the quiet stare into each other's eye for a munite which ended with him diving for me leaving him in the counter on his belly as I stepped back and avoided the grab. I quickly grabbed his belt at the small of his back and pulled him onto my side of the counter (where legally he was very very wrong to be) amd wailed on him with my lead filled baton. He never came back after he got dealt with by the police who sided with me and had a nice video of it to look at besides. :-)
Nope,I would have beat their asses because the idiot kid was throwing stuff at me. Employees not hired and given badges and guns aren't paid to protect things like cookies.

Well you are very unreasonable. If my kid threw cookies at you he or she would be dealt with later. If you came and attacked me I would have to kick your old man ass. Just saying.
1973-4. And the Campus store at 1316 Alder what the only store with video cameras in that era. It also had the most customer traffic and made the most $$$.
I'm a bit skeptical about cameras in C stores in the 70's. I don't remember any. But who knows.
Banks used film back then, and the Scarpellis did indeed have video. Call Don at (541) 485-5694 and ask when his parents first did video in store. They had a time lapse video recorder which they would observe the counter activity that would also show what was being rung up on a zoomed in camera behind us at the register. I'm sure if you were polite and told a white lie like you are researching how early video was used in stores, he would be nice and give you the the same info I just did. ;-)

The article says the father called the police and that they came and arrested the clerk. I don't think there is any moral or legal requirement for a kid to be with both parents.
So who witnessed the alleged spanking? Why didn't the parents have the little cretin under control? The parents should be charged for assault and neglect. They are assholes.
Apparently the father witnessed the incident. Do you have kids Yukon or are you really a fag like some claim? If you have kids you should know that they don't always do everything right. They do stupid stuff sometimes. I don't rank throwing cookies as the worst thing I've ever seen a kid do. Here is the solution. Son you don't go throwing stuff from the store at other people. It isn't right. Apologize to the man. Then I would say I am sorry sir or mam it will not happen again. Then I would deal with the kid when I got home. Charging someone with assault over a cookie is a bit much?
I don't rank throwing cookies as the worst thing I've ever seen a kid do. There is no evidence supporting that supposition. Any 8 year old that would throw anything at an adult in a public place needs a good thrashing. The parents have a ticking time bomb on their hands.
Probably. I once ruined a wedding party because the groom's idiot child was outside just beeping the car horn over and over,and I was trying to sleep after having worked 20 straight hours. I went charging out of the house towards the car after screaming to "quit blowing that bleeping horn" a few times with no results,but had to draw up short when I saw it was a 4 or 5 year old doing it. His idiot father,who had no doubt been encouraging him all the while,laughed at me and said something like "What are you going to do now,tough man?" He wasn't real happy when I told him his son may be too young to cripple for life,but he was just perfect and his ass was on the way to the hospital the next time his idiot child blew the horn. When I am outside in the street barefoot and in my drawers,I'm pretty pissed,not the least bit interested in being reasonable,and by that time I was hoping the kid started blowing the horn again to give me a excuse to fuck his father up. The kids mother just snatched the kid out of the car and the father just stood there and looked at the ground and didn't say a word. I may not have straightened either of them up or taught them consideration for others,but they damn sure never blew the horn outside my house again. The thing is I always insist others treat me with the same consideration I would treat them,and I would not allow a child to act like that in public,and would stop my child if he did. If that makes me unreasonable,I can live with it.

Probably shoplifting while the idiot son had everybody distracted. At a local Wal-Mart a few years back some idiot child about 8 was climbing up on the shelves and managed to pull a tv down to the floor,busting it. Unfortunately,he managed to pull himself down to the floor and busted himself,too. The "grieving parents" who apparently barely knew the boy was with them, ended up with a multi-million dollar settlement out of it even though EVERY damn fool knows you are not supposed to be climbing around on shelving in a store. The "grieving family" got a NAACP lawyer and Wal-Mart settled quickly. What they SHOULD have done was sue the family for the emotional distress of seeing that child crippled and the economic loss of that tv set. You ain't never gonna win if you keep surrendering.

I do. I worked five years at 7 Eleven, including the time I moonlighted as a clerk while in the 82nd and was held up five times. I was thinking about these years after that post and musing how many great war stories I have from that stupid dead end job. For example, Don whom I mentioned in a post to Stone came into the store one day early in the time I worked for the Scarpellis and he kept me busy while his friends (who were both 'using the restroom') put beer out the backdoor from the cooler. I caught the action, put the beer back and listened to Don's lame begging for me to have sympathy; because 'they had girls in the car.' I called his parents in the morning (this was the graveyard shift) and gave them the scope on this poop. I think Don was angry and disliked me all the way up to where he became the owner, and though he's a lot nicer to me these recent years when I see him, I'm sure part of him is still angry at me for doing this. Another thing ironic about that is the fact that he and his boyfriend run the store. Another piece of irony to his trying to steal beer from his own parent's store for a date with the ladies.
