CBS News’ John Miller reports there is preliminary information that the gunman was the father of one of the students. Miller additionally reports the gunman is 20 years old and is from New Jersey.

CBS News is confirming that a second body has been found in the New Jersey home of the shooter.

A law enforcement official in Washington said the attacker was a 20-year-old man with ties to the school and that one of the guns was a .223-caliber rifle. The official also said that New Jersey State Police were searching a location in that state in connection with the shootings. That official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the source was not authorized to speak on the record about the developing criminal investigation. It is not known whether the shooter took his own life or was killed.

“The shooter is deceased inside the building,” State Police Lt. Paul Vance said during a press conference, adding that the scene is secure.

CBS News reports that a potential second shooter is in custody and that SWAT is now investigating the home of the suspect.

A witness tells WFSB-TV that a second man was taken out of the woods in handcuffs wearing a black jacket and camouflage pants and telling parents on the scene, “I did not do it.”

Fox Connecticut reports that the shooting began in the kindergarten classroom.

“It’s just a bad situation,” Newtown Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Stoyak told CBS 2.

NPR is reporting that Connecticut is reaching out to other states to help with autopsies because they don’t have enough medical examiners.

Two students and a teacher were also injured in the shooting and they were taken to Dansbury Hospital, spokeswoman Diane Burke told CBS News York.

Parents flooded to Sandy Hook Elementary School, about 60 miles northeast of New York City, looking for their children in the wake of the shooting. Students were told to close their eyes by police as they were led from the building.

“It was a very orderly evacuation given the circumstances,” Connecticut Post reporter Brian Koonz told CBS New York.

One mother tells CBS 2 reporter Lou Young that it’s like a “war zone” in Newtown. Her child told Young he was about to deliver the attendance sheet to the principal’s office when bullets started going by his head and that a teacher pulled him into a classroom.

Another mother described to Young the devastation parents felt when they found out their children didn’t survive the shooting.

“All these parents were waiting for their children to come out. There were 20 parents that were just told that their children were dead,” she told Young.

Police responded to the school shooting at 9:41 a.m. WFSB-TV reporter Len Besthoff calls it a “chaotic scene.”

Stephen Delgiadice said his 8-year-old daughter heard two big bangs and teachers told her to get in a corner. His daughter was fine.

“It’s alarming, especially in Newtown, Connecticut, which we always thought was the safest place in America,” he said.

Mergim Bajraliu, 17, heard the gunshots echo from his home and raced to check on his 9-year-old sister at the school. He said his sister, who was fine, heard a scream come over the intercom at one point. He said teachers were shaking and crying as they came out of the building.

“Everyone was just traumatized,” he said.

Richard Wilford’s 7-year-old son, Richie, is in the second grade at the school. His son told him that he heard a noise that “sounded like what he described as cans falling.”

The boy told him a teacher went out to check on the noise, came back in, locked the door and had the kids huddle up in the corner until police arrived.

“There’s no words,” Wilford said. “It’s sheer terror, a sense of imminent danger, to get to your child and be there to protect him.”

The school superintendent’s office says the district has locked down schools as a preventive measure to ensure the safety of students and staff. Schools in neighboring towns also were locked down as a precaution.

The White House said Barack Obama was notified of the shooting and his spokesman Jay Carney said the president had “enormous sympathy for families that are affected.”

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says he’s spoken with federal officials who have offered to provide help to the state and the Newtown community in the aftermath of a deadly grade school shooting.

Malloy arrived in Newtown on Friday afternoon, hours after a shooting that left the gunman dead and at least one teacher wounded.

The governor’s office said several state agencies, including emergency management, public health and the Department of Children and Families, will be coordinating the state’s response.

In addition, Malloy says State Police are coordinating law enforcement work with federal and local authorities.

This shooting rivals the massacres at Virginia Tech in 2007 where 32 people were killed and at Columbine High School in 1999 where 13 were gunned down.

The worst mass school murder in American history took place on May 18,1927 in Bath Township, Mich., when a former school board member set off three bombs that killed 45 people.

The death of small business in America is happening right in front of our eyes, and everybody can see it happening, but very few people are doing anything to stop it.

So..... when will it be the right time? When law abiding gun owners and sellers decide to turn in the loonies in their midst? They have proven in the past that they don't want to rat or weed out the crazies.

Instead they prefer to leave it to the government, who will gladly oblige.

From the blog of Bill Randles:

What we Once Knew… Thoughts on the Kindergarten Massacre Posted on December 14, 2012 by billrandles Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit. The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. (Jeremiah 17:7-10)

Why is it that an entire chapter of the Bible is dedicated to the story of Cain, the first recorded will worshipper and murderer? From the very beginning God wanted us to be aware of the consequences of the fall of man. We who were made “in the Image of God” are now fallen, our natures are corrupted, we now “know good and evil” but from the vantage point of evil.

Imagine Adam and Eve’s horror at what their sin had wrought, as they beheld the lifeless body of their son Abel, and listened to the self-serving rationalizations of Cain. They had brought this about. This new, insecure, deadly world of strife and murder they now lived in, came about as a direct result of their sin, and they well knew it.

I have had occasion to ponder similar thoughts in view of the horrifying assault on a kindergarten in Connecticut which claimed the lives of 28 people, most of them under six years old! What is this violent, godless, strange new world that we have wrought in America and the west over the past 60 years?

America has always had guns, but we have not always been this wantonly violent. The media opinion shapers and politicians are already scrambling to use this murder as an occasion to enact heavier regulation of gun control, and to treat innocent civilian gun owners as if they were all murderers in the making. Their knee jerk response is aways more Government control, because to the godless, Government is god!

But they would never dream of connecting the murderers with the widespread acceptance of abortion, (which cheapens all life), and with the Nihilistic cultural shift which accompanied the sexual and atheistic revolutions of the fifties and sixties. Once a culture buys into the idea of disposable life, in the womb, as an expression of personal autonomy, why be surprised by other forms of murder?

We as a society once knew better. Perhaps we shouldn’t have been hostile to the nativity scenes, or to the display of the Ten commandments and to public expressions of the fear of the Judeo Christian God which once graced our American life!

Could the steady dismantlement of anti pornography laws and statutes, or the public and political assault on the stability of marriage have anything to do with our new plague of wanton violence? Would the deliberate confusing of the God assigned sexual roles, in kindergarten and elementary schools have led to our plague of homicidal madness?

Or could it have something to do with our school’s recent dependence upon drugs, legal or illegal? Hundreds of thousands of our school children have since their youth, been put on Ritalin or other behaviour modifying drugs, (as of they were machines, or animals!). And we wonder that we have a drug problem?

The public schools have created this mess, ironically since the early sixties ( around the time God and prayer were expelled from our once enviably successful school systems). They liberated our schools from the stifling constraints of any acknowledgment of our Judeo Christian heritage. We no longer begin the day with a prayer.

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.( 2 Timothy 3:1-5)

We used to know that man was fallen, and that no one is very far from murder, adultery, or any other defection from righteousness. We once knew that we desperately needed God, and that checks and balances on human nature were needful, that man should not be encouraged to “live unto himself”, or to be totally autonomous in his self-expression and development.

But we have jettisoned all of that, to create this “brave new world” of sexual confusion, drug induced behaviour modification, fixation on loyalty to self above all else, total freedom without restraint… and this nihilism is especially is preached in our public schools!

The hostility to any kind of discrimination taught in our schools and academies has something also to do with this madness. There really is good and evil. Evil Exists. Not all cultures, civilisations or “lifestyle choices” are equally valid. It is madness to really try to believe otherwise.

Ironically this unrepressed, drugged, pierced and tattooed generation we have produced, is led to believe they are freer than any generation that ever preceded them! They have been liberated from respect for life, the sanctity of marriage and sex, reverence, loyalty to any but self, and of course from true religion.

Theirs is the freedom of the astronaut who was floating in space, but bothered by the fact that he was still tethered from the lifeline that attached him to the space capsule. He wasn’t totally free yet was he? So he cut the line…in the name of total freedom, and found out too late that all he had freed himself from, was oxygen, and the opportunity to get back into the ship.

What we once knew, and I hope that even in the face of horrors such as this, we can yet recover, is that man os fallen, he is lost and needs God, his Word, His Law and His Salvation. It is not too late to repent!

In a nutshell the three reasons given are:

1) Heathens

2) Homos

3) Drugs

The solution? A well armed staff. One possible issue... about 1/2 of the public school teachers these days are heathen homos on drugs.

Home schooling is the best bet. Public schools & the teachers union are a dismal failure, abolish the DOE.

As soon as the new crop of congress persons are flown over by Israel to kiss the wall, they will win the Golden Yamaka award and become 'chosen ones'. And all will be right in the world (for Israel). Amen

Nope. Not this time.

We're down to Operation Phoenix, World Wide. Which signaled the End of Vietnam, and NOW the End of the War of 9/11.

"The new DIA agents will also take a specialisation course directed by the Commander of Special Operations. Apart from training recruits to eliminate the enemy, he also teaches "non-conventional warfare" to be conducted by exterior forces who are specially trained for this purpose; "counter-insurrection", to help allied governments to repress rebellion; and "psychological operations" intended to influence public opinion so that the population comes to support US military action.

Once their training is complete, these new DIA agents, about 1,600 at first, will be assigned by the Pentagon to missions all over the world. "

O Goody.

" But a Marine official here raised questions about whether the children were “innocent.” Before calling for the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System mission in mid-October, Marines observed the children digging a hole in a dirt road in Nawa district, the official said, and the Taliban may have recruited the children to carry out the mission.

Shockingly, the article quotes a senior officer saying that the military isn’t just out to bomb “military age males,” anymore, but kids, too:

“It kind of opens our aperture,” said Army Lt. Col. Marion “Ced” Carrington, whose unit, 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, was assisting the Afghan police. “In addition to looking for military-age males, it’s looking for children with potential hostile intent.”

What about arming the students?

Every few months we read about students getting in trouble for bringing guns to school.

Guns?

How can they carry the ammo clips as well?

Who's teaching these kids?

It's too easy to Overdo it. Keep it simple.

One's enough if you do it right. Quality over Quantity.....;}

But a Marine official here raised questions about whether the children were “innocent.” Before calling for the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System mission in mid-October, Marines observed the children digging a hole in a dirt road in Nawa district, the official said, and the Taliban may have recruited the children to carry out the mission.

What I want to know is what Hollywood movie or made in CA violent video games was this murderer watching/playing before he decided to take his mother's guns and go out killing.

His Mother had a Bushmaster?

Sounds like Homeland/CIA mind control to me.

Or Texas......;}

I like violent video games. I like Halo, Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty. It is fun shooting things. The solution is not banning video games or guns. It is a moral issue.

Home schooling is the best bet. Public schools & the teachers union are a dismal failure, abolish the DOE.

+3!!!

And a mental issue with some... If they would make it easier to get mental help instead of harder then a lot of things like this wouldn't happen... Allowing Leftards to get mental help easier would make the coutry a much better place!!!

The gun nut wing of the US contingent of gunowners refuse to police their own making it hard on those who are responsible owners. I've seen them mock and and make fun of the 'crazies with guns' but try to get those guns out of their hands?... no way. It's becoming the brotherhood of loonies and their enablers.

If you've been around guns and their owners, you know of at least one loose cannon who has a whole arsenal. So what are you doing about it?
