Title: Liberty University Students Appalled Over Choice Of Romney As Commencement Speaker; Students Say Liberty Should Have Gotten A "Real Christian"

Liberty University is getting a bit of a reputation for being a hotbed of controversy–first over Liberty's decision to allow controversial conservative pastor Mark Driscoll to speak there earlier in the month, and now for Liberty's choice to have GOP presidential hopeful (and Mormon) Mitt Romney give the 2012 commencement speech scheduled for May 12.    Liberty Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr., gave the following announcement:

In announcing Romney’s visit on Thursday, Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. likened Romney’s visit to those of past Republican presidents.

“We are delighted that Governor Romney will join us to celebrate Commencement with Liberty’s 2012 graduates,” he said in a statement. “This will be a historic event for Liberty University reminiscent of the visits of Governor, and then presidential candidate, Ronald Reagan to Liberty’s campus in 1980 and of President George H.W. Bush who spoke at Liberty’s 1990 Commencement ceremony.”

Some students are charging that Liberty is violating its own Christian teachings by allowing Romney to speak there.  CNN adds:

By Friday morning, more than 700 comments had been posted on the school's Facebook page about the Thursday announcement – a majority of them decidedly against the Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr.’s invitation, citing that the school had taught them Mormonism isn’t part of the Christian faith.

“I can’t support Romney and I am happy I decided not to walk (in the commencement) this year,” wrote student Josh Bergmann. “Liberty University should have gotten a Christian to speak not someone who practices a cult. Shame on you Liberty University.”

Janet Loeffler, a 53-year-old freshman at Liberty, expressed her anger at the decision when contacted by CNN. She also sent a copy of the page of the freshman textbook “The Popular Encyclopedia of Apologetics” which includes the passage, “Mormon doctrine stands in stark contrast to Jewish and Christian monotheism, which teaches that there is only one true God and that every other ‘God’ is a false god.”

The Boston Globe reports that Romney is hoping to consolidate his conservative GOP base with the commencement speech; however, that may already be happening.  The Washington Post cites a poll by the Pew Research Forum that has Romney with a huge edge among white Catholic and evangelical voters (73 percent to 20 percent).    If the outrage at Liberty spreads, Romney may lose that edge.  In a YouTube video posted yesterday that has at this time only one view, a Liberty University student who calls himself "will39family" announces his withdrawal from the school because Romney is speaking there:

With drawing from Liberty University after I discovered that our mormon presidential candidate Gov Romney is delivering a commencement address at the university on 12 May. I strongly believe that our Christian leadership has a responsiblity to put Christian leaders behind the pulpit AND podium to address our Christian graduates. By virtue of the fact that we're Christians and know what God's word says, means that we're double accoutable for compromising God's will/word. God bless you.

In the student's video below, the student explains why he chose Liberty, after "prayer and discernment," and how he felt called by God to withdraw because he feels Liberty is straying from their Christian calling by approaching Romney to ask him to speak there.  Allow a moment or two for the video to load:

More like H. W. Bush's appearance, a pep talk from Satan.

Obama's watch stopped on 24 May 2008, but he's been too busy smoking crack to notice.

Maybe losing someone who makes a homonym spelling mistake in the first two words of his "opus" (that you shouldn't see from any high school student) is actually a plus for Liberty U.

As for Romney, he's going there as a GOP nominee, not as a theologian.

They don't have to pray with him, don't have to take communion, etc. It's just a prestigious political event for the college.

"As for Romney, he's going there as a GOP nominee, not as a theologian."

What this situation points to is the problems that long time friction between some Christains and Mormons create systemically in a presidential race where one of the two major candidates believes in the world as concocted by Joseph Smith.

Mormons believe that God was once at man's level and through the keeping of the covenants and living right, a man can earn his own universe that exists with thousands of other universes where he and his spouse create spiritual children to be plicked down to Earth by other Mormons here.

Mormons are good at trying to blend in, but no Christian I know is ready to agree with their theology that Satan and Jesus are brothers who had a feud over who was ging to be born on Earth as the messiah.

There is going to be an inevitable loss of support Romney is going to suffer merely by being Mormon.

That is just a fact. Now the game is to figure out how big this effect is going to be and how it will affect this race.

Long story short: 2012 is a referendum on Obama, not Mormonism.

Any minor hissy fits by some fundie elements to the contrary is a minor distraction. You might see a slight rise in CP vote share in a few states but it is unlikely to decide the outcome in even one state that I can think of, the way that Nader almost certainly caused Gore's defeat in key southern Florida counties.

Keep in mind that the same people who hate Romney as a Mormo-American are bat-shit crazy mad over the idea that the Kenyan is a usurper and a Muslim.

Communist Muslim usurper versus Mormon CEO? That isn't even a close call.

The election was just flat out stolen from Gore, there is no other reasonable way to look at that race.

Religion is an area that always sparks high emotion and there is a well developed tactic among some Christians to challenge and take on Mormanism.

The question is not if this will effect the race in some way, it is how it will.

Fine. Go lynch Ralph Nader if it makes you feel better.

You are in for a rude awakening come November, lib boy. Even against such a miserable candidate as Romney.

The GOP is going to pelt the voters with reminders of who and what the Kenyan really is. By the time this is over, you'll wish we could all just go back to discussing his habit of eating dog meat.

"Fine. Go lynch Ralph Nader if it makes you feel better."

Ironic of you to say this, as it was me that did the information gathering footwork that sparked an investigation into initiative petition fraud in Oregon that kept Nader off the ballot in a year Oregon was one of five swing states in the presidential race between Kerry and Bush.

To make it even more interesting, consider my political party I am affiliated with is the pacific Green Party. By the way, I'm not supporting Obama for re-election, not do I support Mittens.

I already have pissed Nader off and he feels he was lynched off the ballot in Oregon that year.

A stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure. More briefly: a SCOAMF.
