Title: Research Reveals Ancient Struggle over Holy Land Supremacy

Clad in gray coat, Aharon ben Ab-Chisda ben Yaacob, 85, is sitting in the dim light of his house. He strikes up a throaty chant, a litany in ancient Hebrew. He has a full beard and is wearing a red kippah on his head.

The man is a high priest -- and his family tree goes back 132 generations. He says: "I am a direct descendent of Aaron, the brother of the prophet Moses" -- who lived perhaps over 3,000 years ago.

"Actually there's only one main difference," he says. Among the Jews, Jerusalem is the world's religious epicenter, whereas for the Samaritans it's Mount Gerizim.

But which Torah is the original? Until recently, the generally accepted school of thought was as follows: In the fourth century BC, the Samaritans split off as a radical sect. In the Bible, they appear as outsiders and idol worshipers; they are evil. The parable of the "good Samaritan" (Luke 10:25-37) offers a rather atypical portrayal of a member of this sect.

The historian Titus Flavius Josephus, himself a Jew, mentions that the apostates erected a shrine "in all haste" in the year 330 BC, as a rather dilettantish attempt to emulate the Temple in Jerusalem.

Increasingly, though, it looks as though the Bible has handed down a distorted picture of history. Papyrus scrolls recovered from Qumran on the Dead Sea, as well as a fragment of the Bible that recently surfaced on the market for antiquities, necessitate a "complete reassessment," says Schorch.

Around the year 180 BC, the ceremonial building grew to a size of roughly 200 by 200 meters. The Samaritans added a monumental staircase and rooms for "thousands of pilgrims." There were apparently huge crowds of devout visitors. None of this is mentioned in the Bible.

The dispute finally came to a head. In the year 128 BC, John Hyrcanos, a Jewish prince, ascended Mount Gerizim with an army and burned the proud sanctuary to the ground. Archaeologists have found a "burn layer" along with arrow heads, swords, daggers and lead missiles for slings.

The Samaritans never rebuilt their temple. From then on, the victors wrote the (biblical) history books and forced their rivals into oblivion.

And yet the "guardians of the law," as they call themselves, still exist today. When Mark Twain visited the region in 1867, he encountered the "sad, proud remnant of a once mighty community," which he stared at "just as one would stare at a living mastodon."

In other words, the Samaritans were once in the majority. In ancient times, there were 300,000 of them -- perhaps even over a million. But their strictest law almost led to their downfall. It states: "None of you may settle outside the promised land."

Sigh...another revisionist history piece. The Samaritans were not the "other" 10 tribes of Israel. Israel split into the kingdoms of Judah and Israel after Solomon died and his son and heir Rehoboam vowed to be more of a task master than his father. A man named Jeroboam convinced every tribe except Judah and Benjamin to follow him as king of Israel. At this point there are no Samaritans, just Israelites or the northern kingdom. There were periods of peace, collaboration and also war and strife between Judah and Israel over the next few centuries. Then the northern kingdom was conquered by the Assyrian army, and most of the 10 tribes were carted off to exile. Assyria implemented an inhabitant relocation plan as part of pacifying strategy to consolidate their power and expansion. So Assyria then moved in non Israelites from other conquered regions and settled them in what was formerly the northern Israel kingdom. These relocated non-Israelites intermarried with the remnant of Israelites, and Voila! you have the Samaritans. A bit later the kingdom of Judah was conquered by Babylon and were carted off to exile in Babylon. The remnant later returned to occupy Jerusalem, cities and towns outside of Jerusalem and eventually expanded into areas once known as the northern kingdom. It is during this time the remnant of Judah, the Jews contrasted themselves from the Samaritans, who were not of true Israelite "stock."

It might be noted that when Jeroboam became king of the northern kingdom, he immediately became jealous of Jerusalem and created his own golden calf to give his subjects something to worship instead of them heading to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices to God. Following kings of northern Israel embraced the Baals and other foreign false gods. They also implemented the Molech worship of burning their young in fire. This is why they were punished and exiled. Judah ran into the same problems because they allowed their princes to marry women from the northern tribe, and the wives brought their idols and worship with them. So then, with the exception of a few bright spots like Hezekiah, Judah too was punished with the sword and exile.

I mention these details because it surprises me how historians make such wild suppositions on the history of Israel without even knowing what is in the Bible. One scholar on the HI made a bold claim saying, "if we are to believe the Bible, we would think Israel always Worshipped Jehovah and not worship the foreign gods of the time." Then you see the scholar showing artifacts to prove his point. Well if this scholar actually read I&II Kings and I&II Chronicles he would clearly know he made a significant blunder.

So, the Samaritans do not equal the northern kingdom. They came much later after the the 10 tribes were conquered and resettled by the Assyrians. Any claim that they have a direct line back to Moses is pure bunk.

As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend. -Proverbs 27:17 (NKJV)
