Title: Occupy Eugene Ongoing - Consensus model working so far [My home city's Occupy protest]

People in suits and people in casual clothes, cubical workers and day laborers, Duck fans and tie-dye hippies all made their way from the Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza down to the Ferry Street Bridge Oct. 15 around 4 pm to Occupy Eugene. The crowd of 2,000 beamed smiles at each other — and high-fived the Eugene police — as they marched in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street.

The group has drawn together as a nonviolent movement for accountability that is not longer content to let “corporate and special interests run their government,” according to occupyeugene.com

“We — are — the 99 percent!” some chanted at the front of the crowd of almost 2,000. Eugene’s Saturday gathering was the 11th largest occupy event in the nation.

“The people — united — will never be divided!” chanted others farther back.

“I believe in independence, true independence and justice,” said a young woman who gave her name only as Ariel. “I think there is a serious lack of that at the moment. Everyone here is standing for so many different things but, I think when it comes down to it we can agree on those two things — as Americans.”

Lauren Regan of the Civil Liberties Defense Center said, “The group has consensed upon Occupy Wall Street’s demands, but not yet our own demands which may address local issues.”

Occupy Wall Street’s demands, which include disavowing corporations as individuals, “are pretty damn clear,” she says.

Regan adds, “This is a nonpartisan, very broad movement that includes everyone from Republicans to anarchists.”

Occupy Eugene, like Occupy Wall Street and other occupy gatherings, is run by a consensus process that Regan says is remarkably efficient. The webpage downtwinkles.com, which features a video of a Cascadia Forest Defender at Occupy Portland explaining the consensus process, is becoming a viral hit.

Occupy Eugene’s Saturday general assembly reached consensus on following the St. Paul Principles, which are principles of solidarity that came out of the 2008 protests at the Republican National Convention in Minnesota. The principles include not denouncing fellow activists and events and respect for a diversity of tactics and the plans of other groups.

John Flanery, a facilitator of general assemblies at the occupation and a We The People activist who participated in the march, said, “I’m tired of the collusion between big business and government am no longer willing to be ruled by the one percent.”

Cooperative efforts were made Saturday night by Food Not Bombs and The Last Stand Coffee Co., among others, to provide food and drink for those occupying; the more tech-savvy connected a live stream at http://occupyeugenemedia.org/livestream/ to the web. About 100 or so of the supporters have been meeting up on a daily basis for the general assemblies that occur at 7 am and 7 pm. Fewer have been spending the night at the occupation, but supplies like tents, sleeping bags and food abound, and a first aid tent is available.

How long the occupation will last is a matter of community dialogue and coordination, organizers say. Theoretically, the Saturday Market will take place on the Park Blocks next week as usual. This has caused concern for some artisans from the Saturday Market, a number of whom made a showing at the Sunday evening general assembly. Occupy Eugene says there has been an ongoing dialogue between the market and Occupy Eugene.

Embodied in a spirit of collective uprising and self-reliance is not only the recognition of a broken system, but a willingness to repair it, occupiers say. David Parziale, a senior environmental studies major at the UO, say this was the Eugene he had heard of before entering school.

“I came to Eugene because I thought this was a place where there would be a nice mix of between university and the activism that Eugene has a history of having,” he says. “I came here because I thought it was a place where there would be people rising up because there were unjust wars going on. This, finally, after I’m almost done with college — this is why occupy is happening. There’s finally people trying to speak up.”

"Maybe you should try paying them more? Whining about the workers that earn 5,000 a year being forced to leave ain't no way to get me on your side."

When I worked in the woods planting trees and doing other reforestation work, I was paid well. I have gotten as much as 20.00 an hour doing a job i had to pay 200-400 dollars for boots, 50.00 for quality rain gear, sat in a work vehicle for hours at a time going to and from the job site, and because the work is bid out, companies with latino crews outbid Greenhill Reforestation and the Hoedads for whom I worked.

So now people do this work for about ten bucks an hour which makes it much lower when you factor in the costs of material and unpaide travel time.

You are preaching to the choir. I had to put aside my initial anger at how I was disenfranchized from work I loved to learn enough to se the bigger picture; that it made no sense to scape goat mexican pawns used by uncrupulous people to pit one workforce against another to profit from the savings.

I don't waste time hating and villifying economic pawns; I save that for the people that use them.

Will you take the "I will not vote for Romney or Perry no matter what!" pledge?

No. I despise Obama to much.

Out of the candidates to choose from. Here are my top 3.

1. Ron Paul 2. Herman Cain 3. Rick Perry

I like Ron Paul. I like many things about Herman Cain. I hope Rick Perry is ok and really a conservative. I've lived in Texas. I can understand his position on Mexican immigration. Well I can kind of understand it. Yeah it sucks.

"No,but the fact that you somehow "overlooked" making the statement that you didn't vote for him in the general election speaks louder than all your protests."

With respect, my vote for President Obama in 2008 is a matter of record.

I see no need to repeat myself, especially in light of how I am talking to Stone who has trouble telling bait apart from debate.

"No. I despise Obama to much."

Maybe you hate him too much. From my perspective you offer your POV as, "Agree with me or you are fucking scum."

This sort of bombastic presentation does not invite people to find commonality; it drives a wedge between them.

"Agree with me or you are fucking scum."

Yeah so what.

That is only on certain fundamental issues though.

Not the example you are looking for but I will give you one.

If you think rape is ok then I disagree with you and think you are scum.

See how that works?

Another example.

Say you think we should have a tax rate on the rich of 70 percent. Say I think everyone should pay 10 percent flat tax. I may think your idea is stupid but I don't think you are scum for that position.

I think it should be like in Germany. You choose where your kid goes to school. The money follows the student.

I mostly agree with that. I would only add that the school should have the right to refuse admission to any student for cause. If you are a trouble-making gangsta or a retard, they should legally be able to deny you admission. Schools should be allowed to focus their time, attention, and money on the children that are there to learn, not the ones who are there to make trouble.

I had my kids in private school for years. But the price went up to much for me to afford anymore. It sucks.

I agree, but doesn't your church have or promote a private religious school with reduced tuition for the children of the faithful? If not,why not?

I think any teacher should be allowed to exercise their religion in the classroom and influence the students. If the parents don't like it they should be to put their kids in another class.

So,if your children had ONE fundie Muslim teacher that insisted on teaching Islam with math and he was the only math teacher, what happens then? Do you take your child out of school and bus or drive him to another school in another neighborhood, and maybe have a Catholic teacher talk religion with your Protestant child?

Doesn't it seem like a simpler solution to tell the teachers to keep their personal lives and opinions to themselves, and just teach the subjects they were hired to teach?

I don't think you can or should try to force people to be christians. You are or you aren't.

That's not true and you know it. If it were, the religious wouldn't go so far as to go to other countries to "bring God to the Godless",and you could turn on your teebee any Sunday and not see somebody waving a Bible around and screaming about Gods Love and Hellfire.

Freedom of religion doesn't mean muslims. It means baptist, Presbyterian etc. Different christian sects.

ROFLMAO! I see. "Freedom of Religion" means people are free to be followers of any approved religion they are allowed to see and hear about.

There were no muslim founding fathers.

That's true,as far as I know.

They despised muslims as far as I know.

I have no idea if "they" (as a group) despised, loved,or never gave a single thought to Muslims. I do know they all came from countries with "Official Approved Religions",and were either punished for holding other religious viewpoints,or know people that were.

I am also 100% certain that if they wanted to exclude Muslims or people of any other non-Christian faith that they would have at least argued about it,if not place a outright ban on those religions.

Stone, the truth is you are either free to run your own personal life,or you are not free. There is no in-between.

Even rapists who commit this crime of violence don't like it unless it is them doing it.

Comparing this with political disagreement or of points of view does not get your point across well.

As for the tax example, I on't think of another point of view as being 'stupid,' just different and something to engag in lively discourse on.

And i don't think of disagreement as making anyone'scum.'

I've got Buchanans new book. Haven't read to far into it yet. But I'm liking it. If only he was listened to back in 92. I think he would have been a good President.

I am inclined to agree that he was at a minimum more in line with the thinking of the typical American than the other candidates.

What hurt him was his own hypocrisy. Running around with false outrage and screaming "buy American!" while he and his sister were driving Mercedes-Benz cars and talking about "candidates with no job experience" when he had never really worked for a living himself are what hurt him.

He tried to be Barry Goldwater, and failed.

But at least he tried.

But if someone wants to say something they should be allowed to.

As long as that "someone" is not a teacher or other school official,I mostly agree.

Free speech you know. No law....

Here is where I disagree. After you tell somebody 3 or 4 times that you have no interest in being converted to their religious beliefs and are tired of them screaming at you about you going to hell,it becomes harassment if they don't stop. Free Speech does NOT include the right to harass people. I once "fired" a idiot I worked with that was a recent "born-again" that just wouldn't shut up about his love for "Jay-ZUS!" despite me telling him in more forceful language each time that I had no interest in hearing it. He even started following me around to shout Bible phrases at me. I wasn't a boss, but I fired him anyhow by grabbing him around the throat and explaining to him that the world was going to suddenly turn into a very dark place if he didn't shut the fuck up about religion. For some odd reason he left and didn't come back. I guess you could say I was better at making him a believer than he was with him making me one.

I think you will have to admit that all through history force has been used as the primary tool to "persuade" people to at least pretend to worship whatever approved God is worshiped locally.

When the Jews in Spain were told to either convert to Christianity or die and have all their property seized, that was some pretty powerful persuasion.

Mohammed followed the same strategy to gain followers.

com·i·ty/Èkämit/ Noun: 1.Courtesy and considerate behavior toward others. 2.An association of nations for their mutual benefit.

I reached the conclusion a long time ago I'd never see a decent POTUS in my lifetime. Which made it quite annoying to hear people harp on me that I saw President Obama as 'my hero.'

I voted against McNasty and the Tundra trash as much as anything. The annoyance of the shrillness of the attacks during the election had more to do with my choice then you will ever know.

Suffice it to say, if I was so much a fan, I would of donate to him last time. The only one I put money on in terms of donations was Dr. no during the primary season.

I would say right now, the attacks on his wife and daughters bother me far more than the least petty ones directed at President Obama.

The process needs more comity to it. For example; the birfer game and the insult concerning his step dad's name is a yawn to me.

Myself, I had a step dad and he wanted us to adopt his last name which I tried briefly in forth grade as kids have a propensity to want to please the adults they deal with.

That name would of been especially unbearible had my name been 'James.' Michael Bond was bad enough as not only was the secret agent thing big back then, there was a brand of bread back East by that name in the 1960s.

I'm sure had I risen to the level of Senator then POTUS, people hating me would be calling me Mike Bond instead of Mike McCarthy.

So I just feel sympathy for the bastard when I read your signature with a name in it that is not his.

I disagree. Here is why.

You disagree because you are a True Believer when it comes to your religious faith, and you want and need everybody to agree with you. There is no question at all in your mind that everything you say about your FAITH (notice religion is about faith, not fact)is absolutely true, and you can't understand why everybody else doesn't see it that way.

Should these so called Wall Street protesters be told to go home you are harassing people?

Of course not. Apples and oranges. PUBLIC employees (teachers) represent government, and in a PUBLIC institution like public schools they have a captive audience that has neither the right to leave or to disagree vocally. They are a captive audience.

Which is comparable to the work situation I found myself in. I lacked the ability to move away and not hear the "giving witness" nonsense of my fellow employee, and he refused to quit preaching to me. In this case his right to Free Speech was overpowered by my right to not have to listen to it. In other words, any damn fool that wants has the right to climb up on a soapbox and babble any nonsense he wants in a public park or on a public street, but he does NOT have the right to follow you into your home or place of employment in order to try to force his views on you.

On the other hand, you can avoid the so-called Wall Street protesters by simply not going to where they are protesting,or walking right past them.

PLUS,they aren't agents of the government. This is big.

Individual citizens have the right to free speech. The government does NOT. The Bill of Rights were written and voted on in order LIMIT the power of government over individuals, not to protect the free speech of governments, which does not exist.

How would you react if Romney were elected and the government suddenly decided to push Mormonism off on the population by teaching and promoting Mormonism in the public schools? Would public employees (teachers) have the free speech RIGHT to promote Mormonism on the taxpayer dime, and would this meet your approval?

My answer is no.

I agree. We have the right to ignore them.

For you to be consistent you would have to say yes imo.

You are wrong. You don't seem to understand the difference between individual citizens and government when it comes to Free Speech. One has it,one doesn't.

I reached the conclusion a long time ago I'd never see a decent POTUS in my lifetime.

Reagan was a decent man. That idiot Jim-Mah Cawtur was a decent man, even if he was and is a poster child for ignorance on parade.

I voted against McNasty and the Tundra trash as much as anything.

McLunatic was and is more of a danger to the Republic than Barry Soetoro is in his wildest dreams. He had experience and favors owed to back him if he had been elected, plus he knew first-hand where a lot of the bodies in the US Senate were buried.

You hate Palin because at that time she was still a conservative, and she was telling the truth about your idols of the left. She reminded you at a subliminal level how little support your political philosophy has amongst the typical American citizen, and you know in your heart that if the alleged Republican ticket had been upside down with her at the top that they would have beaten the Chocolate Messiah like a rented mule.

And I can guarantee you that you have ZERO standing to call her trash while supporting evil bitches like Bubbette! Clinton,Mad Maxine Walters,Nancy Pelosi, and other Dim females. She has more character and a better mind than all of them combined, and it burns your ass.

The annoyance of the shrillness of the attacks during the election had more to do with my choice then you will ever know.

What are you complaining about? The man you voted for stated in public that he hated America and white people, was a product of Affirmative Action that never ONCE accomplished anything based on merit or hard work, and didn't even consider himself to be an American. He identified himself as a African, right up to the point where he won the Dim primary.

Anybody that DIDN'T complain about that asshole and the moral bankruptcy of the Dim Party either has no mind or no conscience. Maybe even neither.

The only one I put money on in terms of donations was Dr. no during the primary season.

Yet in the end you voted for the one candidate that was and is diametrically opposed to everything Ron Paul has ever said or stood for.

This is what you have in common with the Party Animals that voted for McLunatic because he had a R behind his name. Political stances are nothing, and having the "right" union label behind your name is what is important when push comes to shove and you enter the voting booth.

I would say right now, the attacks on his wife and daughters bother me far more than the least petty ones directed at President Obama.

His wife is a more masculine version of him, making her a evil bitch. Another America hater, and another product of Affirmative Action. Calling her a Wookie is insulting to Wookies.

I agree that his daughters are off-limits,and anybody that has gone after them should be ashamed of themselves. They are nothing but children, and are not responsible for the sins of their parents.

After all, they ain't like Chelsea "Howdy Doody" Clinton, and sitting in on international political discussions with world leaders to give them her alleged wisdom. They are just little girls running around and being little girls.

There can be no doubt that they are going to be prime candidates for criticism 10 years from now, though. Like their mother and Chelsea Clinton, they will graduate from college and immediately get hired at 6 figure salaries for no-show jobs. That's how political payoffs are done.

To be honest, this won't really be their faults, though. This is the atmosphere they have been raised in,and they don't and won't know any better.

The process needs more comity to it. For example; the birfer game and the insult concerning his step dad's name is a yawn to me.

Uh,huh. But it is ok to call Palin Tundra Trash, right? Not to mention spread lies about her retarded son being Bristol's son,her having affairs, etc, etc, etc?

I'm sure had I risen to the level of Senator then POTUS, people hating me would be calling me Mike Bond instead of Mike McCarthy.

I'm sure they would have if you had legally had your name changed to Mike Bond, and never had it legally changed back to Mike McCarthy. Which is what Barry Soetoro has done and refuses to explain how he could have had a passport with the Soetoro name on it as an adult, and then suddenly appear on the political scene in the US as Barry Obama with no documents explaining the name change.

So I just feel sympathy for the bastard when I read your signature with a name in it that is not his.

Crocodile tears. Soetoro IS his last known legal name.

Murron: "...and son- of-a-bitchin TRAITORS like you."
Rat-boy: Meaningless tripe

Hardly. Murron nailed it- and you- with cold hard facts.

You ARE a traitor, rat-boy. There is no other word which so concisely describes your true nature.

Not only have I worked quite hard most my life, I am a combat vet who served honerably.

I'm quite certain that Benedict Arnold made similar claims.

Your words are amusing at best, and have standing only as fiction at best, slander at worse. ;-)

I see nothing amusing in being accurately described as the traitor you are. You claim to have "served honerably," [sic] yet you demonstrate the utter absence of honor.

When you strip away the clothes, toys, money or power, all a man has that is all his own, is his honor. Had you any honor, you'd already know that, but your lack of it, requires me to spell this fact out. Honor is doing the right thing, even when you think nobody else is watching. Honor is being able to look at yourself in the mirror, and be satisfied with what you see.

Let me give you an example:

Around 1999, I was working in Silicon Valley. Coming back from a Reno trip, I was sitting at a stop-light at around 10:30 at night, in the rain. The car diagonally back on my right- an mid-80's Camaro- had an explosion in the engine compartment- the hood was bulged upward, flames shooting out... I put my car in park, hit the flashers... I opened the doors, pulled out both parents, and dug the three kids out of the back seat, while the fire was consuming the front half of the car... The entire family was dazed, but except for breathing some smoke, they were ok. About two weeks later, one of my clients mentioned seeing me, during the fire. He drove by, didn't slow down. In fact, everybody drove by, and nobody stopped to help. My wife happened to be there, when the client mentioned it- and she was very surprised that I'd not mentioned it... I told her it wasn't something to brag about, it just happened. My wife said I was the most Christian man she knew. (I still don't know exactly what that meant, but ok.) And she expressed contempt for my client- because he saw what was going on, didn't stop to help, and displayed no honor.

In your case, rat-boy, you wear your meager accomplishments- a reject helicopter mechanic among them- as demonstrations of your honor. The fact is, you pass these off as your badges of courage (or 'honer'), and you feel the need for people to notice them, because your words and your actions demonstrate you have none.

At the end of the day, you're a coward, as most traitors are. You are too weak to have a moral center, so you cloak your weakness in a veil of righteous indignation for the various liberal agendas, to hide that cowardice.

Oh, you pretend to stand for various causes, you pretend to be an upstanding citizen... But you're just another leftist loser, a traitor, and a parasite. It's interesting to note that you're a loser, even when compared to the relatively shabby standards of the left.

BTW, I noticed you changed from the "gimme" picture, after I pointed out that your indignation with billionaires getting a sweet-heart deal is based on jealousy (that YOU couldn't be such a successful parasite).

You mean again. You saw Reagan. Or at least his image on TV.

You saw a great president and were to biased to realize it.

The Reagan years were the best years of your life.

Lots of people, lost lots of money in S and Ls that was not insured during the Reagan regime. I knew two who lost their entire retirement savings. One lost over 150,000 which was quite a lot of money in the eighties.

That happened during Bush if I recall. Regardless it wasn't Reagans fault for the Saving and loans. It was the Saving and loans problem.

Just like it isnt Obamas fault that he inherited a huge debt. It is Obamas fault for his debt and how he screwed it up and made it even worse.

Then your recall is faulty. You really need to bone up a little more on the Reagan years.

The huge debt that Carter added to and passed down to him was initially incurred under Nixon

Did you know that the concept of Cap and Trade was also created and implemented during his regime? He said it was quite successful.

And of course let's not forget the largest amnesty in my lifetime.

"You hate Palin because at that time she was still a conservative, and she was telling the truth about your idols of the left."

Actually, you are wrong. I found her antics concerning the race amusing, pointless and relatively harmless except to the people who's pockets she picked dialing for dollars whereever, whenever and however she could do so.

I am an environmentalist. The second she ordered that wolf kill by aircraft in Alaska she became my enemy.

"...would have beaten the Chocolate Messiah like a rented mule."

Considering his skin tone is within the normal range of some of the darker Euroethnic folks out there including me, I would say I'm surprised so many people went for white chocolate, as that brand of candy convection is considered the least popular among the general public.

"The man you voted for stated in public that he hated America and white people, was a product of Affirmative Action that never ONCE accomplished anything based on merit or hard work, and didn't even consider himself to be an American. He identified himself as a African, right up to the point where he won the Dim primary."

This is some expansive rhetoric. I wouldn't use shch a broad brush as you concerning Affirmative Action. The results have had a mixed result. But it is nowhere near as bad where it was less than successful as the racism and the exclusion created by it was in the century or bfore the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s.

I also have never forgotten it was never meant to be set in stone. If it has no purpose anymore, it should be ended.

As for the alligation President Obama hated White folks, that is a stretch considering half his liniage is White. I never heard him say he hated Caucasians, and I never heard him claim to be African; only that he has African heritage because of the country of origin of his Dad.

" Yet in the end you voted for the one candidate that was and is diametrically opposed to everything Ron Paul has ever said or stood for.

This is what you have in common with the Party Animals that voted for McLunatic because he had a R behind his name."

And I used to like LBJ who was the traitorous bastard who was part of the conspiracy to murder JFK. Where President Obama stands in relation to Ron paul's political paradigm was not a consideration when I voted. As I said, I primarily voted against the Republican ticket.

As for the 'D' behind his name, I don't have one on my voter's card. I am a Pacific Green. I gave up being a Precinct committee person slot and other earned standing when I jettisoned that party from my registration.

Being Democrat does not get a get out of jail free card from me because they are of that party.

"Which is what Barry Soetoro has done and refuses to explain how he could have had a passport with the Soetoro name on it as an adult, and then suddenly appear on the political scene in the US as Barry Obama with no documents explaining the name change."

All smoke and mirrors. As far as I'm concerned, I have not only not seen this sort of documentation, I don't particularly care about issues invloving someone using their birth name, or even the name they prefer to use.

I see that as a tempest in a teapot, much as any grumpling about how evil michelle Obama is.

She is not an elected official and she is a very smart and compassionate woman who has done much in her private career.

I like her more then Barack. In any event, being a beautiful woman with smarts would make me happy to have a date with her were she single. ;-)

The huge debt that Carter added to and passed down to him was initially incurred under Nixon

Yet,the beginning of it was legislation passed and signed into law during the LBJ years. The whole "Big Society" thing. Guess what? Somebody has to pay for all the "free stuff".

Not to mention paying for VN.

Of course,Nixon did his own piling on by creating the EPA.

Yeah,because wolves are so enviro-friendly,right?

Ruh,ROH! You're in trouble now! I'm going to email the off-White House and tell Barry you said he looks like a honkie.

That's because you are a leftist, and criticizing AA for you would be like a priest criticizing the Bible.

The results have had a mixed result. But it is nowhere near as bad where it was less than successful as the racism and the exclusion created by it was in the century or bfore the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s.

HorseHillary! What next? Are you going to repeat the lie that blacks weren't allowed to vote before the Civil Wrongs Act of 1964 was passed?

As for the alligation President Obama hated White folks, that is a stretch considering half his liniage is White.

Yeah, that's why he was always talking about his white mother and his honkie grandparents that raised him, instead of the African alleged "father" that never gave them a dime or helped him in any way.

I never heard him say he hated Caucasians, and I never heard him claim to be African;

Then you never listened, never read his books, and never read the original web page of the church he went to for over 20 years without hearing a word his Rev-Rund spoke.

As for the 'D' behind his name, I don't have one on my voter's card.

It doesn't matter because you still vote "D" in order to make sure nobody with a "R" behind their name holds office.

only that he has African heritage because of the country of origin of his Dad.

His alleged father. His actual father was Frank Marshall Davis.

Yup,you know it's all smoke and mirrors, yet you claim to have never seen or even care about the truth. You obviously don't even care if a president is a US citizen or not,or even if he is elected under a alias.

I take that back. You would be screaming to the heavens if he had a R behind his name.

She is not an elected official

Yet she spends millions of taxpayer dollars to go on dates and shopping trips with her friends and relatives.
