(Reuters) - Former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi died of wounds suffered in his capture near his hometown of Sirte on Thursday, a senior NTC military official said.

National Transitional Council official Abdel Majid Mlegta told Reuters earlier that Gaddafi was captured and wounded in both legs at dawn on Thursday as he tried to flee in a convoy which NATO warplanes attacked.

"He was also hit in his head," the official said. "There was a lot of firing against his group and he died."

There was no independent confirmation of his remarks.

Russian media is reporting his death so I do believe he is indeed dead.

MOSCOW, October 20 (RIA Novosti)

Libyans celebrated the death of Muammar Gaddafi with peals of gunfire on Thursday as news broke of the dictator's death during an attack on his hometown of Sirte.

Gaddafi died of his injuries near Sirte, the National Transitional Council said.

The ousted dictator was reportedly captured, wounded in both legs and taken away in an ambulance.

“We announce to the world that Gaddafi has died at the hands of the revolution,” Abdel Hafez Ghoga, a spokesman for the National Transitional Council, was quoted by Al Arabiya as saying.

“It is a historic moment. It is the end of tyranny and dictatorship. Gaddafi has met his fate.”

Al Arabiya reported that the body of the deposed Libyan leader had arrived in Misrata and said it would be allowed to film the corpse.

The Aljazeera satellite TV channel quoted a doctor who examined his body in Misrata as saying Gaddafi had died of bullet wounds to the head and abdomen.

News agencies showed photos of a dead Gaddafi made with a cell phone.

Aljazeera TV showed the first photos of a dead Gaddafi made with a cell phone.

In one photo, Gaddafi, his face covered in blood, is being dragged to a vehicle.

According to some reports, Gaddafi was also hit in his head during an NTC raid on Sirte.

Earlier reports said Gaddafi was captured and "critically injured."

However, Al Libya, a TV channel loyal to Gaddafi, has denied the reports.

Gaddafi's son Motassim was also reported killed in Sirte.

NATO and the U.S. State Department said they could not confirm any of the reports.

Since 080808, I believe the GRU over anything from any OECD.

Sarkozy - if he is to save his banks - desperately needs a huge expansion of the EFSF fund, while Merkel needs that like she needs a hole in the head.

And still no oil flowing out of Libya....which is the Only point of any of this...8D

The US authorities have promised to investigate how and when the intimate photographs of the former Iraqi dictator wound up in The Sun , Britain's best-selling newspaper. The tabloid, frontpaged on Friday a photograph of a bare-chested Saddam standing in white underpants and folding a pair of trousers.

The photograph is headlined 'Tyrant's in his pants' and sets the tone for still more humble ones inside the tabloid. The inside photographs show the man who once had a palace in every part of Iraq meekly washing his clothes by hand. Yet another photograph shows Saddam asleep on his bed. The Sun , which refused on Friday, to reveal where, when and how it came by the sensational photographs of the Butcher of Baghdad, would only quote American military sources to say they handed over the photos in the hope of dealing a body blow to the resistance in Iraq.

"Saddam is not superman or God, he is now just an ageing and humble old man. It's important that the people of Iraq see him like that to destroy the myth," the American source is quoted to say. The source added, "Maybe, that will kill a bit of the passion in the fanatics who still follow him. It's over, guys. The evil days of Saddam's Baath Party are never coming back - and here's the proof." But a furore has erupted over the release of the photographs, with presumed American logistical support, from Saddam's American-run prison, at a compound near Baghdad since his December 2003 capture.

British military experts pointed out that the photographs, which may or may not be up to one year old, could still be deemed to have contravened Saddam's rights as a prisoner and could have violated the Geneva Convention.
