Title: Bachmann Stands By Claims That ‘Founding Fathers’ Ended Slavery

Rep. Michele Bachmann, who officially announced yesterday in Iowa that she is running for president, appeared on “Good Morning America” Monday, where George Stephanopoulos attempted to clarify some of her previous statements.

Among them: Bachmann’s claim that “the Founding Fathers who wrote the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence worked tirelessly to end slavery.”

“Now with respect, Congresswoman, that’s just not true,” Stephanopoulos said. “Many of them including Jefferson and Washington were actually slave holders and slavery didn’t end until the Civil War.”

Bachmann dodged the question, answering, “Well, you know what’s marvelous is that in this country and under our Constitution, we have the ability when we recognize that something is wrong to change it. And that’s what we did in our country. We changed it. We no longer have slavery. That’s a good thing. And what our Constitution has done for our nation, is to give us the basis of freedom unparalleled in the rest of the world.”

She goes on to claim that John Quincy Adams, who was a small boy during the Revolutionary War and did indeed eventually work to abolish slavery, should be counted as a “Founding Father.”

Watch the visibly distraught Stephanopoulos’ interview with the tea party candidate, in which she discusses the minimum wage, Sarah Palin and her foster children.

Originally aired June 28, 2011. Embedded courtesy ABC.

Bachmann Stands By Claims That ‘Founding Fathers’ Ended Slavery

The "Founding Fathers" were member of the 1st Continental Congress that began to define this nation as separate from England and the 2nd Continental Congress that actually declared independence.

The Framers took over from them in 1786. Many of the Founders had zipola to do with the Framing...some because they were dead...but some, Patrick Henry, did so deliberately...

We've gone from knowing AMerican history to politicians being defended by their supporters for promoting the most insane bastardizations of this nation's history I have ever heard...e.g. Palin stating that one reason for Revere's ride was to warn the English.

Eliminating minimum wage may get more people on the payroll - but they would earn so little (I am assuming they would be paid below the minimum wage since that is what was preventing them from being hired) - that they would be working poor who would still need govt assistance like food stamps.

Minimum wage should have been raised years ago and has been held back to levels that ensure those paid under that amount will not be able to live with that income.

Bachmann dodged the question...

She is a woman of astonishing ability.

It is our responsibility to protect that child once that child’s born too. When we start debating a budget, let’s make sure we don’t cut 100,000 vaccines. Let’s make sure we’ve got health insurance. Godwincing,

All you demonstrate here is that you've never run a company.

Not surprising to me in the least, btw.

Godwincing,

You really don't need to demonstrate the point about you've never run a company, as you do here.

When the 'workers rise up'? I suggest you on the left worry more about the here and now, when the UNEMPLOYED RISE UP and vote to fire Owe-bama and company.

And whats this 'we' shit? Let alone 'your class' nonsense?

I'm a small business owner, dumbass. I pay way above 'minimum wage', at least double, because my company is only as good as the people we hire. Again, if you had ever run a company you would know this.

but, obviously, you don't. So you have to rely on insane leftwingnut talking points, and look ridiculous as a direct result.

Kinda like Owe-bama, or to be fair, McCain.

Actually, most of them did just this. Read the Federalist papers.

Wha...chuckle...huh?

A) The Federalist was written by three people...John Jay, Alexander Hamilton and James Madison and expresses only the personal opinions of each as an individual.

B) There is no first person opposition to the institution of slavery expressed in any of The Federalist. The only alusion to this is stated in general terms regarding the 3/5's compromise...Hamilton #54: "Might not some surprise also be expressed that those who reproach the Southern States with the barbarous policy of considering as property a part of their human brethren should themselves contend that the government to which all the States are to be parties ought to consider this unfortunate race more completely in the unnatural light of property than the very laws of which they complain?" #38 mentions the slave trade but makes no moral judgement as to the institution whatsoever.

And replace him with what Boof? Reps and Senators and a POTUS who believe that the reason that people are unemployed is because their own fault? Reps and Sens and a POTUS who will cut their benefits? Their access to heath care? Demand that they contribute more to pensions and health care while vetoing a modest tax increase on millionaires?

Do you really believe that the electorate, when all is said and done, is going to elect people who have been blaming them for their own problems and, as a reward for so voting, will gut any safety net that they may have?

"It were doubtless to be wished, that the power of prohibiting the importation of slaves had not been postponed until the year 1808, or rather that it had been suffered to have immediate operation. But it is not difficult to account, either for this restriction on the general government, or for the manner in which the whole clause is expressed. It ought to be considered as a great point gained in favor of humanity, that a period of twenty years may terminate forever, within these States, a traffic which has so long and so loudly upbraided the barbarism of modern policy; that within that period, it will receive a considerable discouragement from the federal government, and may be totally abolished, by a concurrence of the few States which continue the unnatural traffic, in the prohibitory example which has been given by so great a majority of the Union. Happy would it be for the unfortunate Africans, if an equal prospect lay before them of being redeemed from the oppressions of their European brethren!"

-- James Madison, Federalist Paper No. 42

Now, I know Iā€™m not going to change the minds of any of the True Believersā€¦those who read all of Reverend Alā€™s sermons, and say things like, ā€œYou know, global warming can mean warmer OR colder, wetter OR drier, cloudier OR sunnier, windier OR calmer, ā€¦ā€. Can I get an ā€˜amenā€™??

One of my tavern acquaintances told me yesterday that July 1 will be his last day and he's retiring. He's 62 but he's very concerned about making his monthly medical insurance payments of ~$660 per month until he reaches age 65. He'll likely find part-time work or work under the table if he can. He appears healthy but he had some sort of stroke 4 years ago.
