(AFP) – 2 hours ago WASHINGTON — The US budget deficit shot up 15.7 percent in the first six months of fiscal 2011, the Treasury Department said Wednesday as political knives were being sharpened for a new budget battle. The Treasury reported a deficit of $829 billion for the October-March period, compared with $717 billion a year earlier, as revenue rose a sluggish 6.9 percent as the economic recovery slowly gained pace. The Treasury argued that the pace of increase in the deficit was deceptive because of large one-off reductions in expenditures made during the first half of fiscal 2010, compared with previous and subsequent periods. Those included a $115 billion reduction in funds spent on the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) -- the financial institution bailout program -- in March 2010. But 2011 so far has also seen significant increases in spending on defense, Social Security, health and debt service, while receipts have not grown as fast. "The jump in outlays mostly owed to a smaller estimated reduction in TARP outlays this year versus 2010," said Theresa Chen at Barclays Capital Research. However, she said, the trend shows that taxable income is rising at a 6.9 percent annual pace, and individual incomes taxes are up 20.6 percent, "consistent with general economic improvement." The figures came amid a sharp, politically partisan battle in Washington over cutting spending and raising taxes, with President Barack Obama preparing Wednesday to release his plan for reducing the long-term deficit. He also faces a looming battle over increasing the country's official debt ceiling, so that the government can continue to borrow to finance the deficit.

Thank you for some sense of honest analysis. But I'm dealing with Badeye, who blamed the deficit of 2007-08 on House Democrats. Therefore, by that logic, House Republicans are responsible for the current deficit. Well 65, Dems did control both Houses, did they not? House Republicans are guilty of being bamboozled into financing two fake wars and mostly responsible for the deficits we're incurred thus far. OTOH, why hasn't 0bama pulled out of Iraq like he promised? And why aren't Dems pressuring him about it? Moreover, why are the Dems supporting the Nobel Peace Prize winning warmonger for his foray into Libya?

Maybe because there is a difference with taking exception to something President Obama did, said or believes in and sounding like an extreme wacko on the subject of the President. But not the Presidency. Agreed, and don't forget Medicare Part D - supported by Paul Ryan among others. Our withdrawal from Iraq is still scheduled for completion by the date negotiated by the Bush administration. Obama never promised an immediate pullout. And many Democrats have been outspoken in their criticism of Obama for his actions in Libya.

I've been overseas and seen it first hand, I know better...... As have I and my one son studies languages and has been in - and taken ill - in several nations. I also have had to deal with hockey related injuries in Canada. Belgium has walk in clinics throughout the nation and, if a clinic is not open, there are a number of "emergency centers" that will take walk-ins. Also, Belgium, France, Italy and Germany will allow pharmacies to dispense medicine for common affliction, conditions such as pink eye would probably qualify. So, either you were under informed while in Belgium or you tried the American route. You also perpetuate the myth that doctors here have tons of openings for people like you who need to see a doctor. They don't.

I'm 53 and have raised 4 kids. I've traveled the world...as have a couple of my children. The health care system here is horrible. Anyone promoting otherwise is under informed.

These are some examples of state and federal government regulations and rulings that drive up healthcare costs..... it's not all inclusive cause I just don't know them all.... FDA regulation of existing and new drugs coming to the marketplace drives up prescription costs by 15-20%...... Insurance policies "mandated" to cover things such as plastic surgery, breast enhancement, abortions, accupuncture, massage therapy, podiatry and osteopathy...... Guaranteed issue” allows people to wait till they are sick and then buy insurance; “community rating” prevents insurers from charging different prices to people of different ages and health status. These may sound like compassionate ideas, until you realize they make insurance so expensive that millions of people are exposed to financial ruin because they aren’t allowed to buy basic policies focused on catastrophic costs. (Sound familiar?? ObozoCare)!! Not being able to carry your insurance policy from one state to the other....

Challenge. Insurance policies "mandated" to cover things such as plastic surgery, breast enhancement, abortions, accupuncture, massage therapy, podiatry and osteopathy...... Every thing you listed, with the exception of podiatry, is optional coverage that can be negotiated to be provided by a policy. Not one of those is "mandated". BUt why should podiatry be excluded? When I broke my ankle, the ortho I saw is also a podiatrist. Guaranteed issue” allows people to wait till they are sick and then buy insurance; “community rating” prevents insurers from charging different prices to people of different ages and health status. These may sound like compassionate ideas, until you realize they make insurance so expensive that millions of people are exposed to financial ruin because they aren’t allowed to buy basic policies focused on catastrophic costs. (Sound familiar?? ObozoCare)!! Bullshit. Increasing the number of insured increases the number of HEALTHY people who are purchasing a product that they will not use. And, btw, the US is probably the only industrialized nation that does not guarantee catastrophic illness coverage for its citizens.

That makes sense to do that, they should do more of that here. It really only takes "med techs" to diagnose and treat most minor illnesses....... The clinic at the base hospital is dispensing certain over the counter drugs but not much more than that.... My daughter ended up seeing a "med tech" (not a doctor) for her pink eye because it isn't that serious of an illness. But when your wife is freaking out well what can you say, she had to go "right" then.... I didn't even find out about this till I got back to England 3 weeks later..... But the big difference is in "Life threatening" illnesses (like cancer) and nice to have things like hip and joint replacement, and pacemakers..... If they think you're too old or too ill you won't get treatment...... At least here you still have a decent chance of getting the treatment you need and desire for the more serious things.... I don't think our system is perfect by any means, a big dose of deregulation would go a long ways towards fixing it.....

Oh yes they are by some states....... New York requires every insurance policy sold there to cover podiatry. Acupuncture coverage is mandated in 11 states, massage therapy in four, osteopathy in 24, and chiropractors in 47. There are an estimated 1,800 or so such insurance “mandates” across the country, and the costs add up. I don't make the rules, no matter how stupid they are, I just post them.....

Planned Parenthood is a medical service provider. They accept insurance payments as well as payments on a sliding scale from the uninsured. You'd better make sure your insurance provider does not pay for medical care provided by planned parenthood cause if they do - using your logic, your premiums may be freeing up money for abortions.

We have a high-deductible policy and a medical savings account, we are the poster child for Republican health-care reforms over the last few years. Our out of pocket for my wife's cancer treatments have run us about $20,000 a year over the last two years. We can afford it, plenty of others couldn't.

You can see Clinton's Secretary of HUD (Andrew Cuomo) crowing about these "victories" on YouTube if you search just a bit. What Clinton did was to get a ball rolling that nobody could stop. Banks had gotten the message. If you don’t relax your standards and start writing high-risk loans, the government will sue you. If you do write high-risk loans, the government will reward you with a guarantee. What followed was the housing disaster as we know it. The disaster quickly became much larger than the subprime problem. Once the banks had gotten into the psychology of realizing that bad behavior was being rewarded, there was nothing stopping them from expanding this concept. Why make high-risk loans only to low-income people? Why not make money on the transaction fees associated with selling high-risk mortgages to everyone, then sell those mortgages upstream, ultimately to someone guaranteed directly by Fannie & Freddie or to Fanny & Freddie themselves? It is ridiculous to insist that the subprime mortgages themselves must do all the damage if we are to credit the CRA for the problem. If a guy blows up a dam (as Clinton did by distorting the market) then we blame him, not the water that he releases, for doing all the further and larger damage downstream.

I think it's because they feel what the hell are we doing there anyway??? There doesn't seem to be a goal or stategy for that matter.... I would imagine they also think why are we helping the rebels, when Obozo wouldn't even open his mouth to support the citizens of Iran when Amendenijad was slaughtering them in the streets...... Nothing foreign policy wise we've done in the last couple of years makes any sense..... Especially in the Middle East, if they don't get that area quieted down and get rid of the radicals the whole world will suffer for it.....

I spoke of the Party as a whole. There are some good Republicans, I agree, but they are few and far between and have no real 'pull' when compared to the vast numbers of leftists/moderates. What makes me attack the Republican Party is that they pretend to be conservative as a whole, and they are not. They are left/moderate as a whole. There are some Democrats that are more conservative than some Republicans. Either way, to argue the merits of one Party over the other is like arguing which group of whores holds the most honor.
That's subjective, therefore debatable. But it's easy enough to tell which whores cost more, just compare prices.
