Researchers from Stanford University and the University of California-Davis published their analysis in the journal Energy Policy.

Measuring costs vs benefits

The main challenges, say the authors, will be summoning the global will to make the conversion. "There are no technological or economic barriers to converting the entire world to clean, renewable energy sources," said author Mark Jacobson, a Stanford professor, saying it is only a question of "whether we have the societal and political will."

He's right, we have no technological or economic barriers to blocking our friends from Planet X-49 from coming down and presenting us with magical interstellar pixie dust power.

In 2001 the newly elected Bush administration sought to nullify California's CAFE standards (so much for Republican support for state's rights) which were nothing more than on target for complying with Bush the elder's legislation. While Detroit was whining "its too hard, we can't" Japan was doing it.

We all know what happened after that - Japan ate our lunch, again, and Detroit ended up on life support.

Pixie dust to some, a challenge to be met for others.

That doesn't make sense... because......the CAFE standards are "HIGHER" in California (you live there.. right) than in any other part of the country. So if Detroit was whining "Its too hard, we can't" then Detroit slit its own throat.. (or should I say the unions slit their own throat)...... not Bush....

When you're paying somebody close to 6 figures a year to put screws in a dashboard then you are slitting your own throat!!!!!

Some counties in California have no annual emissions testing requirement.

Some counties in California have no annual emissions testing requirement

So what has that got to do with gas mileage standards??

We're free to increase MPG, since we don't worry about harmless emissions like CO2. Plants love it, and we have more horsepower than most of California too. Business is booming at speed shops, where smog equipment is changed out for stuff that works.

No smog inspection required in this California county, CARB region. In our own small way, we're saving the planet, from eco-nuts.

According to this Murron-like poster you are off topic, because IT doesn't understand the correlation.

We have lots of booming speed shops in my CARB county too. We also have a major raceway with NASCAR and Pinks, and drag races every Wed night during good weather.
