On Monday, police officers in Northampton, MA, arrested Manuel Pintado, 47, and charged him with corruption by threat, and written threat to kill or do bodily harm, both felonies. According to police, Pintado admitted to sending threatening messages to Florida Rep. William D. Snyder (R- Tallahassee), reportedly saying he was “glad the email made him nervous.” Pintado made the threats after Rep. Snyder introduced a bill into the Florida legislature which would allow police to ask anyone they encounter for proof of immigration status or citizenship. Even more troubling, the death threat was made on January 8, only hours after Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot at an event in Tucson. Pintado, who has a long criminal history, apparently sent the email from a Starbucks near his home in Northampton. Rep. Snyder told Fox News: "Once the threat came in...and was a threat against my family...that caused me to really pay attention to it and think about it.” He continued: “Under no circumstances will I let this threat or any threat stop me from doing what I think is in the best interest of my constituents and of the people in Florida.” Pintado wrote: “To the Honorable William D. Snyder; You better just stop that ridiculous law if you value you rand (sic) your familie's (sic) lives (expletive)” Pintado is currently awaiting extradition to Florida.
