Republicans lead Democrats 51% to 41% on a generic ballot heading into November's midterm election, the largest gap in favor of the GOP in Gallup's 68-year history of tracking the critical political benchmark.

The Republican lead has steadily increased from five percentage points earlier this month to the current 10 point spread, suggesting Republicans have the upper hand and momentum.

Previously, the largest GOP advantage measured by the poll, five points, was found in 2002 and 1994. Republicans made significant gains in the House both years.

"The last Gallup weekly generic ballot average before Labor Day underscores the fast-evolving conventional wisdom that the GOP is poised to make significant gains in this fall's midterm congressional elections," according to Gallup's website.

Republicans, meanwhile, are now twice as likely as Democrats to be "very" enthusiastic about voting, according to the poll. Half of Republican registered voters said they are "very" enthusiastic, compared with 28% of independents and 25% of Democrats.

The widest generic ballot lead in the poll's history was 32 points in Democrats' favor. That was measured in July 1974 before Republican President Richard Nixon resigned. In a generic ballot, pollsters ask whether voters are more likely to vote for a Republican or a Democrat for Congress. Subscribe to *Elections 2010*

So the good news is the Democrats are going to lose seats. The bad news is the Republicans are going to win them.

Should they take congress, it will certainly put the ball in their court and results will need to be realized before 2012.

Of course that isn't going to happen, which will illustrate the void in the GOP agenda and setting up President Obama for an easy re-election.

Some even speculate this is by design. I'm not ready to go there yet.

Kind of like he didn't have a snowballs chance in 2008, Mudbot? Isn't that what you claimed then, Mudbot? Why don't you tell us all the glorious things the mighty GOP has in store for us if we vote them back into power, my GOP cheerleader friend.

My oh my, my Obamabot friend, we did everything U RATS wanted and the economy got WORSE and WeThePeople R much deeper in debt!!

HOO'd a thunk it? The ObamaNation's Marxist Agenda FAILED...AGAIN!!

I'm not saying the Republican Party deserves to lead, but we now know--FOR SURE- -the DemocRAT Party is TheDevil and if any of these RATS/RINOS supported the ObamaNation's efforts to destroy this economy, they must be dispatched with via the ballot box. Any friend of Obama is an ENEMY of America!!

Imho, of course...MUD

Duhhh, meg...now we're gittin' to the source of yer irrationalities. U gotta stop voting fer the Party, U vote fer yer Congresscritter or U vote fer yer Senator or U vote fer the man/woman you want sitting in the White House. That's all U vote fer at the Federal level, meguro.

Hey, dude, I ain't proud of it, but I, too, usedta vote fer the Party and held my nose as I pulled the lever fer such lowlife Milquetoast Moderate RINOS as Jawn Warner, Bobdole, and BOTH Bushes. No more, though, in 2002, I told RINO Jawn Warner and the GOP to GO F*** ITSELF and have been happy with my independent status ever since. When you liberate yerself from partisan considerations, you no longer seem obliged to defend the indefensible while constantly compromising yer most basic principles...it really is quite liberating.

Plus, as an Independent, BOTH Parties invite you to their shindigs...LOL!!

C'mon, meg, U know U wanna join us Indies in our righteous quest to DEFEAT the ObamaNation...MUD

So, these days, from which party do you find yourself selecting candidates?

"...from which party do you find yourself selecting candidates?"

Obviously NOT the DemocRAT Party that is trumpeting collectivist solutions to every issue that confronts us. Other than that, I usedta support my Congresscritter when he usedta be Eric Cantor. But since I moved, I plan on being a thorn in the side of my RAT Congresscritter, Bobby Scott. Other than that, I don't have a vote come November, our RAT Senators don't come up fer another 2-4 years...MUD

I'm still in Kentucky.

"Where did you move to, Mudbot? My memory had you in the vicinity of Richmond, VA."

Yer memory still serves you well...I'm living in Historic Richmond now, while the ex- still has the house in the 'burbs, where our young'uns are gittin' skeweled. Bobby Scott may not get knocked off this year, but I think we're gonna see him replaced in 2012, once I've had a little time to get the lay of the land and latch myself onto some candidate who can DEFEAT the Marxist Obamabot, Bobby Scott...MUD

Thanks. Okay, you moved to the doghouse in the back 40.

You're okay even if you believe there are two parties. So do 95 percent of Americans.

If you promote Palin in the next two years, you'll disappoint me. And I'll have to jump on you about it, but don't take it personally, otay?
