Alvin Lee, Ten Years After guitarist and Woodstock standout, dead at 68 Post Date: 2013-03-07 08:28:03 by sneakypete

Alvin Lee, one of the major guitar virtuosos from the 1960s British school of blues-and-rock purism, died Wednesday of "complications from a routine surgical procedure." He was 68. Lee was best known as the lead guitarist of the band Ten Years After, whose 11-minute version of "I'm Going Home" at Woodstock in 1969 became one of the memorable musical segments of the subsequent concert film. Woodstock propelled Ten Years After into the forefront of the second-wave British Invasion, whose emphasis often was on flashy guitar playing with extensive solos. Lee told the BBC in 2012 that he still had the 335 he played at Woodstock, but that he didn't use it much any ...

Former NBA star Dennis Rodman traveled to communist North Korea, a trip financed by a documentary filmmaker. Rodman appeared neither officially nor unofficially as part of the U.S. government. An incredulous George Stephanopoulos of ABC subjected Rodman to a grilling more suitable for a corrupt, double-dealing politician: "When you said you love Kim (Jong Un) and think he's awesome, were you aware of his threats to destroy the United States and his regime's horrendous record on human rights? ... Do you think you have a responsibility to ask him about it so that you don't be perceived as sort of propping up his regime, his cult of personality? ... (He's) a 'great ...
Randpage: Hour 8 / Rand Paul vows to speak 'as long as it takes' to block Brennan Post Date: 2013-03-06 20:05:15 by We The People

WASHINGTON -- In a rare, traditional filibuster, Sen. Rand Paul vowed to speak on the Senate floor "as long as it takes" to draw attention to his concerns about the Obama administration's policy regarding the targeted killing of American terrorism suspects. The Kentucky Republican took to the floor before noon Wednesday to block an expected vote on the nomination of John Brennan to lead the CIA, with aides saying he could continue for hours. Paul, beginning his remarks, said he would continue "until the alarm is sounded from coast to coast that our Constitution is important." "Are we so complacent with our rights that we would allow a president to say he might ...
Tell Your Senator to Support Rand Paul! Post Date: 2013-03-06 20:01:30 by We The People

Rand Paul is simply looking for an answer. Can the Obama administration assassinate Americans in their own country without due process? This is a basic issue of civil liberties. In filibustering the nomination of John Brennan to head the Central Intelligence Committee, the Kentucky Senator is taking a historic stand for liberty. The Constitution preserves the right of all Americans to due process. So far President Obama has refused to answer if the Bill of Rights still applies under his new security policy. The question is simple: do we still have our traditional rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? Senator Rand Pauls filibuster is an attempt to answer this vital ...
There Used To Be Freaking Camels In The Arctic Post Date: 2013-03-06 20:00:18 by Ferret Mike

In the northernmost reaches of Canada, within the Arctic Circle, scientists have found fossils of...camels. Wait, what? North America was a crazy place a few million years ago. The megafauna alone would make the world's most awesome zoo collection: giant sloths! Mastodons! Nine-foot saber-toothed salmon! Dire wolves! And, believe it or not, camels. Yes, camels originally arose in North America 45 million years ago and lived there until human migrated into the area around 16,000 years ago. So, we might expect to find camels somewhere in North America, sure. But researchers just found fossils on Ellesmere Island, in the northern territory of Nunavut, Canada, far above the Arctic ...
Rand Paul slams Attorney General Holder for 'refusal' to rule out drone strikes in US Post Date: 2013-03-06 19:57:57 by We The People

Sen. Rand Paul is blasting Attorney General Eric Holder's assertion that the government could conceivably use drones against its own citizens in the U.S. as "frightening," saying such an action would violate the Constitution. Paul, R-Ky., was responding to comments by Holder released Tuesday before the Senate Intelligence Committee approved the nomination of John Brennan, President Obama's pick to be his next CIA director. Paul said in a statement obtained by Fox News that Holder sent him two letters regarding the constitutionality of the use of legal force, such as drones against Americans and on U.S. soil, after Paul petitioned Brennan to speak on the matter. In the ...

American citizens abroad should he decide they are involved with Al Qaeda, can he assassinate suspected Al Qaedaconnected US citizens in London or Berlin? What about a suspects teenage son, a junior in a Canadian boarding school? Of course not. Pakistan is completely ...

Alleging unpaid wages and repeated retaliation, McDonald's workers in central Pennsylvania launched a surprise strike at 11:00 this morning. The strikers are student guest workers from Latin America and Asia, brought to the United States under the controversial J-1 cultural exchange visa program. Their employer is one of the thousands of McDonald's franchisees with whom the company contracts to run its ubiquitous stores. We are afraid, striker Jorge Victor Rios told The Nation prior to the work stoppage. But we are trying to overcome our fear. The McDonald's corporation did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The J-1 visa program is ...

On Tuesday, the Free to Choose Network, a non-profit political organization dedicated to promoting the principles of personal and economic freedom, released a video on their YouTube channel of a young former Congressman Ron Paul talking about guns in 1989. In the video, Paul says that "no one should tell you you can't own a gun because it might be misused." He goes on to make the argument that any misuse of an object, including a gun, should be dealt with in the courts. Paul is also shown holding a gun in the video while he references ...

As he did during last months hearings on the Benghazi attacks, Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) once again brought up the possibility of an Obama administration cover-up of the role played by the CIA in providing weapons to opposition forces in Syria. During an interview Sunday night on WABC Radios Aaron Klein Investigative Radio, Paul said, There has been a lot made of the political cover up of President Obamas administration saying this (Benghazi attack) had something to do with a homemade film from some guy in Los Angeles. But in reality the question is, or the secondary quotation is, why would they do a cover up? What are they covering up? Continuing ...

CARACAS, Venezuela President Hugo Chavez, the fiery populist who declared a socialist revolution in Venezuela, crusaded against U.S. influence and championed a leftist revival across Latin America, died Tuesday at age 58 after a nearly two-year bout with cancer. Vice President Nicolas Maduro, surrounded by other government officials, announced the death in a national television broadcast. He said Chavez died at 4:25 p.m. local time. During more than 14 years in office, Chavez routinely challenged the status quo at home and internationally. He polarized Venezuelans with his confrontational and domineering style, yet was also a masterful communicator and strategist who tapped into ...

ABC News - Zimmerman Stuns Court, Waives Right to 'Stand Your Ground' Hearing in Trayvon Martin Case (ABC News) George Zimmerman's attorneys stunned court observers Tuesday when they waived their client's right to a "Stand Your Ground" hearing slated for April that might have led to a dismissal of the charges in the shooting death of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin a year ago. However, the defense lawyers didn't say whether they would waive the immunity hearing outright. They left open the possibility for that hearing to be rolled into Zimmerman's second degree murder trial. Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch captain in his Florida subdivision, shot ...

By now, we're all well aware of the woeful tale of the Applebee's waitress in Missouri who publicized getting stiffed on a tip from a church pastor last month and subsequently was fired. Objecting to an 18 percent tip automatically included on her restaurant bill, Pastor Alois Bell crossed it out and wrote: "I give God 10 percent why do you get 18?" Waitress Chelsea Welch posted a photo of the bill on the social media site Reddit, and the story went viral, prompting the restaurant to fire her for the unseemly disclosure. These types of "stiffers for Christ," unfortunately, are not all that rare. "The idea that Christians are poor tippers apparently has ...

From Daily Kos (Sep 2011) Advisors for President-Elect Barack Obama feared the new administration would face a coup if it prosecuted Bush-era war crimes, according to a new report out this morning. From Pat Dollard (Nov 2012) Excerpted from Free Republic: According to (shadowy anonymous blogger) Sorcha Faal the Russian militarys GRU foreign intelligence unit presented a report to Kremlin leadership late last month that said Obama removed one of the United States Navys most powerful admirals from his command (in the wake of Benghazi 9/11) specifically because he fears a military coup is being planned against him. Arpaio loses appeal on pink-underwear case Post Date: 2013-03-04 17:31:55 by Ferret Mike

The 9th Circuit said dressing inmates in pink underwear a hallmark of Joe Arpaio appeared to be punishment without legal justification. The U.S. Supreme Court declined Monday to hear Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaios appeal of a ruling that criticized a decision by his jail officers to force pink underwear onto a mentally ill inmate who erroneously believed jailers were trying to rape him. The refusal by the court means the lawsuit by the estate of Eric Vogel appears headed to trial for a second time. Arpaios office won the case at trial, but the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals threw out the verdict and called for a new trial in a ruling a year ago. The 9th Circuit ...

When I began writing this I was overwhelmed with the desire to hit something
or vomit. Over the coming weeks that desire has lessened to a slow simmer of absolute disgust and dismay at what has become of the party that I used to love and support. I was once a Republican living in a red state. Today Im a registered Democrat living in a blue state. This is my story and why I left the Republican Party. It all started in 2007. I was a 27 year-old divorced woman with no children. I was a survivor of severe domestic abuse. I was single with no money, no home and no plan other than to try and be something more than what I was. I had a car, my clothes and hope. After moving to a new ...

BREAKING NEWS - Obama / Soetoro discovered at Columbia University address. My friends. I am still going through all of the files that I made from all of the database pulls that I was completing almost daily on Obama and Soetoro just to name a few. On 10/21/2011 I completed a pull for the last names of Soetoro and Obama for the state of NY and I printed it and scanned the pull and made a file then for later use. I just found them again. I want the public to see it first because as Americans we all deserve the truth first before anyone else. Let others try to disprove this. I DARE THEM. Note the addresses that belong to both, "Barack Soetoro" (not Barry) and to Barack Obama as of 02/2010. It ...

A national committee devoted to fighting hate speech and other crimes in Poland has filed a complaint with prosecutors in Gdansk accusing Lech Walesa of promoting a "propaganda of hate against a sexual minority", after the Nobel peace prize-winner said gay people had no right to a prominent role in politics. Walesa said in a television interview on Friday that he believed gay people had no right to sit on the front benches in parliament and, if there at all, should sit in the back "or even behind a wall". "They have to know that they are a minority and adjust to smaller things, and not rise to the greatest heights," he told the private broadcaster TVN ...
Plight of the bumblebee: Disappearance? Post Date: 2013-03-03 10:46:23 by A K A Stone

WASHINGTON It's not just honey bees that are in trouble. The fuzzy American bumblebee seems to be disappearing in the Midwest. Two new studies in Thursday's journal Science conclude that wild bees like the American bumblebee are increasingly important in pollinating flowers and crops that provide us with food. And, at least in the Midwest, they seem to be dwindling in an alarming manner, possibly from disease and parasites. Wild bees are difficult to track, so scientists have had a hard time knowing what's happening to them. But because of one man in a small town in Illinois in the 1890s, researchers now have a better clue. RECOMMENDED: Fewer bees in US threaten almond ...
