Freddie Mac reports Q3 loss, asks for $6B in aid
Post Date: 2011-11-03 09:32:45 by Happy Quanzaa

WASHINGTON (AP) — Government-controlled mortgage giant Freddie Mac has requested $6 billion in additional aid after posting a wider loss in the third quarter. Freddie Mac said Thursday that it lost $6 billion, or $1.86 per share, in the July-September quarter. That compares with a loss of $4.1 billion, or $1.25 a share, in the same quarter of 2010. The government rescued McLean, Va.-based Freddie Mac and sibling company Fannie Mae in September 2008 after massive losses on risky mortgages threatened to topple them. Since then, a federal regulator has controlled their financial decisions. Taxpayers have spent about $169 billion to rescue Fannie and Freddie, the most expensive bailout ...

Fannie, Freddie Executives Snag Millions in Bonuses

A Republican senator is calling on President Obama to cancel the $12.8 million in bonuses that were approved for 10 executives at the government-seized mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that received a $170 billion taxpayer-funded bailout. “I am calling on the president of the United States to cancel those bonuses and explain to the American people, the taxpayers who bailed out Freddie and Fannie, why he continues to reward failure,” Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., said at a news conference Tuesday. The Federal Housing Finance Agency, the government regulator of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, approved the bonuses for 10 executives from the two government-sponsored agencies ...

Solargate Update: Obama considered bailout for Solyndra days before bankruptcy

View Photo Gallery — The Solar company failed after getting a half-billion dollars in federal loan guarantees. WASHINGTON — Days before a solar panel maker collapsed, the Obama administration considered a bailout that would have provided an infusion of cash and made the federal government a part-owner of the company. Officials rejected the plan, which was recommended in August by the investment banking firm Lazard Ltd. Lazard was paid $1 million for analyzing options related to the faltering company, Solyndra Inc. Details of the bailout plan were among nearly 1,200 pages of documents released by the government Wednesday, hours before a House subcommittee was set to vote on a ...

On FOIA, Obama wants a license to lie

It's not often that the liberal American Civil Liberties Union and conservative Judicial Watch agree on anything, but the Obama administration's lack of transparency has brought the two together. Obama's Justice Department has proposed a regulatory change that would weaken the Freedom of Information Act. Under the new rules, the government could falsely respond to those who file FOIA requests that a document does not exist if it pertains to an ongoing criminal investigation, concerns a terrorist organization, or a counterintelligence operation involving a foreign nation. There are two problems with the Obama proposal to allow federal officials to affirmatively assert that a ...

Senate Dem seeks (MORE!) federal funding for shit

Senate Dem seeks federal funding for diapersSen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) on Tuesday introduced legislation that would allow federal block grants that states now use to subsidize child-care services to also allow for the purchase of diapers and "diapering supplies." The bill, S. 1778, would amend the Child Care and Development Block Grant Act of 1990 to allow diapers and related supplies to be bought with grant money provided to states. Under current law, the money is meant to subsidize child-care services to parents who are entering the labor force or are in job training and education programs. It also helps subsidize child-care services for certain eligible families. Under ...

Bruce Bartlett, Ex-Reagan Economist: Idea That Deregulation Leads To Jobs 'Just Made Up'

WASHINGTON -- Key proposals from the Republican presidential candidates might make for good campaign fodder. But independent analyses raise serious questions about those plans and their ability to cure the nation's ills in two vital areas, the economy and housing. Consider proposed cuts in taxes and regulation, which nearly every GOP candidate is pushing in the name of creating jobs. The initiatives seem to ignore surveys in which employers cite far bigger impediments to increased hiring, chiefly slack consumer demand. "Republicans favor tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations, but these had no stimulative effect during the George W. Bush administration, and there is no reason ...

Vice President Joe Biden visits Ener1 Inc.’s plant in Greenfield, Ind., in January.| AP Photo An advanced battery manufacturer that was awarded millions in federal stimulus dollars is now in financial hot water and is being closely monitored by the Energy Department. New York-based Ener1 received a $118.5 million grant to expand its manufacturing operations in Indianapolis, Ind., run by a subsidiary EnerDel, which received a visit from Vice President Joe Biden earlier this year. But NASDAQ pulled the firm from trading Friday for failing to file its most recent quarterly report on time. Ener1 also let go of its chairman, Charles Gassenheimer, late last month. Now DOE says it's ...

Solargate Update: Second ‘stimulated’ green firm KO’d

WASHINGTON -- Another one of President Obama’s “green jobs” companies has bitten the dust. Massachusetts-based Beacon Power Corp., which got a $43 million loan from the Department of Energy, filed for bankruptcy over the weekend -- sparking new questions about the troubled green-energy loan program. The company’s collapse came just two months after California solar-power company Solyndra went under following a questionable $535 million loan from the same program funded by Obama’s stimulus law. “This latest failure is a sharp reminder that DOE has fallen well short of delivering the stimulus jobs that were promised, and now taxpayers find themselves millions ...

Regulators Investigating Democrat Ex-NJ Gov Corzine's MF Global for Missing Money

9:55 p.m. | Updated Federal regulators have discovered that hundreds of millions of dollars in customer money has gone missing from MF Global in recent days, prompting an investigation into the brokerage firm, which is run by Jon S. Corzine, the former New Jersey governor, several people briefed on the matter said on Monday. The recognition that money was missing scuttled at the 11th hour an agreement to sell a major part of MF Global to a rival brokerage firm. MF Global had staked its survival on completing the deal. Instead, the New York-based firm filed for bankruptcy on Monday. Regulators are examining whether MF Global diverted some customer funds to support its own trades as the ...

Solargate Update: House panel may subpoena White House documents

WASHINGTON (AP) - Officials say the House Energy and Commerce Committee could meet as early as next week to vote on a subpoena demanding White House records relating to a federal loan guarantee that went to a now-defunct California solar company. The Republican-controlled panel asked last month for documents that might shed light on actions by White House officials in connection with the original loan guarantee to Solyndra as well as a restructuring of the deal that took place last year. So far, the White House has not turned over the requested documents. Any subpoena could trigger a claim of executive privilege by the White House and elevate the political stakes, although the issue ...

When the United States of American killed Anwar Awlaki, an American citizen living in Yemen, using a drone which found him far from any battlefield, no one was concerned about justice or even any process of justice. Now the greatest military power on earth has done the same to Abdul Rahman al-Awlaki, the 16-year-old son of Anwar Awlaki. When death came, he was at a barbecue, preparing to eat. Not many in America or elsewhere have shown interest in these two cases of illegal murder of its citizens by a state gone mad. Awlaki’s cousin and several other young people at the barbecue were also killed in the attack. The Obama administration has not even called this loss of life a ...

Children May Be Given Death-Linked Anthrax Shots Under Bioterrorism Scare Trials

Obama administration officials are debating whether or not a study should be launched which would lead to injecting healthy children with the anthrax vaccine in an experiment to “see whether the shots would safely protect them against a bioterrorism attack.” Of course the safety of the anthrax vaccine has been questioned in the past by health professionals and the former Senate Majority Leader — also a physician. That is why the Obama administration is using the threat of bioterrorism as a method of getting the public to submit to the study through fear. The administration had mainstream health officials touting the vaccine as a way to ‘protect’ the children from ...

I recently wrote about an NYPD officer's admission in court testimony that police regularly plant drugs on innocent people to meet arrest quotas. Now, the NYPD is wrapped up in another scandal.  Eight of them are charged with participating in a gun-smuggling ring. From Reuters:Five of the men charged were active-duty officers, two were on active duty for part of the time they were accused of involvement in the schemes, and one was retired. All worked in Brooklyn, most in the same precinct. The goods smuggled had a street value of more than $1 million, prosecutors said, and the scheme was carried out over the past year. The details are shocking:  The complaint accused the ...

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A Staten Island police inspector who violated department guidelines when he used pepper spray on Occupy Wall Street protesters last month has been transferred to Staten Island Borough Command from his Manhattan South assignment, a police source told the Advance. The chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, which oversees the TSA, has asserted that the release of a classified report on TSA security failures will renew calls for the replacement of the agency with private airport security personnel. “The failure rate (for body scanning equipment) is classified but it would absolutely knock your socks off,” Florida Republican, Rep. John L. Mica told reporters during a briefing Monday. Mica also asserted that recorded instances of pat downs failing to detect contraband are “off the charts.” This information is also currently still classified, but is due to be released within weeks as part of an upcoming ...

Agency Suspected Lawmaker in Scheme Funneling Funds to Benefit Friends, Ex-Staffers Last week’s release of FBI documents finally put in writing what nobody had ever said on the record: The FBI suspected that former Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.) and lobbyists close to him were running a scheme to funnel earmarks to sham companies and nonprofits to benefit the lawmaker’s friends and former staffers. Bits and pieces of this story were kicked around for years before Murtha died in February 2010. The Los Angeles Times, Roll Call, the Washington Post and others had documented the odd appearance of earmarks for tiny defense contractors that just happened to open an office in western ...

GAO: With China dialogues, WH violated law It’s not every day that the Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports that the Executive Office of the President violated federal law, but that’s the conclusion the GAO released in a report this month, after reviewing bilateral talks with the Chinese government hosted by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). The White House Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) disputes GAO’s conclusion, arguing that the law does not constitutionally apply to the OSTP's diplomatic activities. The disagreement stems from meetings this past May in which officials from the OSTP met with representatives of the Chinese ...

One of Johnson's clients there include the Biotechnology Industry Organization, which lobbied hard for ObamaCare, and got a lucrative provision granting 12-year exclusivity to biotech drugs (meaning generics are prohibited for that long). Another client has been TransCanada, where Johnson lobbied for approval of the Keystone XL Pipeline -- a project much of the Left has forcefully opposed. He's also had finance clients. Yesterday, lobbyist Johnson joined the Obama re-election campaign. Of course, the ...
