FORT IRWIN, Calif. — Federal officials say more than two dozen firearms have been stolen from a Southern California military base. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says in a statement Friday that 26 AK-74 assault rifles and one Dragunov sniper rifle were stolen from a supply warehouse at Fort Irwin in San Bernardino County on July 15. ATF spokesman Special Agent Christian Hoffman says arrests have been made and one rifle has been recovered, but the agency is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to more arrests. Hoffman could not say how many arrests have been made, whether those arrested were military or civilian or what a motive may have been. ...

Exclusive: ATF Intimidates Gun Owners With Home Visits (2 guns within 5 days)

Even as it finds itself embroiled in a scandal that saw weapons being deliberately sent to criminal gangs in Mexico, the ATF has issued a letter ordering firearms dealers in border states to report sales of two or more semi-automatic rifles, and is following it up by harassing gun owners with intimidating home visits as well as threatening gun dealers to spy on their customers. As the Justice Department announced earlier this month, "All gun shops in four Southwest border states (Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico) will be required to alert the federal government to frequent buyers of high-powered rifles." However, what the media failed to report at the time was the most ...

Democrats try to channel scandal into gun control push By Jonathan Strong Faced with bracing evidence and the testimony of four ATF agents contradicting the Justice Department’s initial blanket denials that assault weapons were knowingly allowed to escape into the clutches of Mexican drug cartels, Democrats tried a new approach at a hearing Wednesday. Rather than focus on questioning the GOP’s investigative tactics, Democrats on the House Oversight Committee sought to subtly channel the burgeoning scandal into a push for new gun control laws. For instance, Rep. Gerry Connolly, Virginia Democrat, connected the apparently reckless investigative strategy to the National Rifle ...

#4. The 18th Century Machine Gun (was Racist)

In 1718 Britain, a guy named James Puckle patented the world's first rapid fire weapon: the Defense Gun, also known as the Puckle Gun. Resembling a giant revolver on a tripod, this gun claimed to be able to fire 63 shots in seven minutes (which in modern mathematics is known as "nine shots a minute"). That may not seem like much, but when you consider that the most skilled musketeers at the time could only fire three shots a minute, it was a vast improvement. "Kills three times as many Frenchmen!" The official reason why the Puckle Gun never caught on with the British Army is that it had way too many cylinders -- like three or four. Clearly this was more ...

Laguna Beach, California -- Even after last week’s steep selloff in the commodities markets, the “Flight to Safety” trade is still on...big time. Gold may have retreated from its all-time high, but applications to purchase a handgun continue soaring to record levels. According to the FBI, background-check applications for handgun buyers are on a record-setting pace so far this year. “In this year’s first quarter,” Bloomberg News reports, “the FBI’s Instant Criminal Background Check System processed 4.25 million requests on prospective gun buyers – up 16% from a year earlier.” If the current pace continues, the number of “gun ...

After sharply cutting back on the number of stores that sold guns in 2006, Wal-Mart says they'll be available again in about half its stores. NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Wal-Mart said Thursday that it is bringing guns back to many of its U.S. stores in an effort to lift slumping sales. In 2006, Wal-Mart (WMT, Fortune 500), the world's largest retailer stopped selling guns in the majority of its stores, blaming slow demand for those types of firearms. Wal-Mart currently sells rifles, shotguns and ammunition in about 1,300 stores in the United States. Those firearms will now be available at about half of Wal-Mart's 4,000 stores. The retailer doesn't sell handguns in any of its ...

Confusion led to a brief encounter between an armed Broward judge and police officers on Easter. Broward Circuit Court Judge Ilona Holmes, her sister and her sister’s family says they were ordered at gun point by several Broward Sheriffs Deputies on Easter Sunday to come out of her sister’s home with their hands up. It was no evening of peace for the Deerfield Beach family, who’d just finished dinner with friends and family, and sent extra Easter dinner to a needy family connected with their church. Then, at 8:20 p.m., police got a call about a possible burglary next door. But a bad address caused police to go to the wrong home. “Do I feel safe?” asked Carmita ...

Assembly Chief Sergeant-at-Arms Ronald Pane has given four legislators permission to carry concealed weapons in the state Capitol, according to two senior Senate staff members who have been informed of the decision. State law prohibits carrying loaded firearms and deadly weapons in public buildings, except under limited conditions. A 2010 bill by Assemblywoman Cathleen Galgiani, D-Livingston, tightened the law, requiring that most holders of concealed weapons permits or other gun licenses get permission from the sergeants-at-arms of the state Assembly or the state Senate in order to bring their gun in the Capitol or legislative office buildings. "May you live," the ancient curse goes, "in interesting times." We certainly live in days that are anything but boring. The word is, politically, figuratively and, in the case of Japan, literally on fire. We mere mortals, the common citizens, the working men and women of the United States, must stand by and watch it burn down around us. Or must we? With the increasing instability of our politics, our economy and even the physical world itself, only the insane or the stupid would fail to prepare. Westerners have always been prone to technological pseudo-preparation. By this I mean that we, as modern citizens of the West, tend to think that once we acquire a tool, the ...

Texas Poised to Pass Bill Allowing Guns On Campus By JIM VERTUNO, Associated Press AUSTIN, Texas – Texas is preparing to give college students and professors the right to carry guns on campus, adding momentum to a national campaign to open this part of society to firearms. More than half the members of the Texas House have signed on as co-authors of a measure directing universities to allow concealed handguns. The Senate passed a similar bill in 2009 and is expected to do so again. Republican Gov. Rick Perry, who sometimes packs a pistol when he jogs, has said he's in favor of the idea. Texas has become a prime battleground for the issue because of its gun culture and its size, ...

Bloomberg: Obama Not Concerned About Illegal Gun Sales

WASHINGTON – New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg sharply criticized the White House on Sunday for what he described as its unwillingness to clamp down on illegal gun sales on the US-Mexican border. The Obama administration recently denied a request by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF) for an emergency rule that would force gun dealers on the border to report bulk sales of assault rifles. ATF described it as part of an effort to bust the smuggling of weapons by drug cartels. Bloomberg, an outspoken advocate for stricter gun laws, issued a statement through his group, "Mayors Against Illegal Guns." "The White House decided that the illegal ...

Bill would require all S.D. citizens to buy a gun

Five South Dakota lawmakers have introduced legislation that would require any adult 21 or older to buy a firearm “sufficient to provide for their ordinary self-defense.” The bill, which would take effect Jan. 1, 2012, would give people six months to acquire a firearm after turning 21. The provision does not apply to people who are barred from owning a firearm. Nor does the measure specify what type of firearm. Instead, residents would pick one “suitable to their temperament, physical capacity, and preference.” The measure is known as an act “to provide for an individual mandate to adult citizens to provide for the self defense of themselves and others.” ...

Arizona Judge Stood Firm With Sheriff Mack [John Roll ruled to gut Brady Bill]

During the hours following the Tucson tragedy, as the details slowly emerged and we learned that a relatively unknown congresswoman was seriously wounded and a federal judge had been among the six killed, many Americans wondered if there was a specific target and who that might have been. More importantly, why was Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) getting all the ink while Judge John Roll remained virtually unnamed for a whole day? In this business, we at AFP long ago learned to read the white part of the newspaper. We were in good company. Even Texas Republican Rep. Ron Paul’s daily Internet news release was asking the same questions the following week. Next, former Arizona Sheriff ...

Calif. handgun ammo rules thrown out (ruled unconstitutional)

FRESNO, Calif. — A trial court judge in central California has thrown out key sections of a state law restricting handgun ammunition sales, barring authorities from registering bullet buyers' thumbprints on the grounds that it would be unconstitutional. Gun rights supporters applauded Tuesday's ruling in Fresno County Superior Court, saying the law would have created uncertainty by forcing local sheriffs and firearms shops to decide for themselves what caliber of bullets were covered under the regulations. The statute also would have compelled customers to buy their handgun ammunition in face-to-face transactions, which they said would not have prevented a tragedy like the ...

In a dramatic ruling giving gun owners a win in an National Rifle Association / California Rifle and Pistol (CRPA) Foundation lawsuit, this morning Fresno Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Hamilton ruled that AB 962, the hotly contested statute that would have banned mail order ammunition sales and required all purchases of so called “handgun ammunition” to be registered, was unconstitutionally vague on its face. The Court enjoined enforcement of the statute, so mail order ammunition sales to California can continue unabated, and ammunition sales need not be registered under the law. The lawsuit was prompted in part by the many objections and questions raised by confused police, ...

Former Vice President Dick Cheney, a staunch gun advocate, says tighter weapons regulations might be "appropriate" to prevent another tragedy like the Arizona mass shootings that left six people dead and a congresswoman seriously wounded. Cheney, an avid hunter, said he is "willing to listen to ideas" on how to better control the purchase and use of firearms. "Whether or not there's some measure there in terms of limiting the size of the magazine that you can buy to go with a semiautomatic weapon — we’ve had that in place before. Maybe it’s appropriate to re-establish that kind of thing, but I think you do have to be careful obviously," ...

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona has become a national leader in the gun rights movement in recent years as the state enacted law after law to protect the people's right to bear arms nearly anywhere, at anytime. The shooting rampage that wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, a former legislative colleague, has done nothing to slow down the Legislature. Gun rights bills were introduced in the days after the shootings last week, and more proposals are to come. "I don't think it really changes anything," Republican state Sen. Ron Gould said of the mass shooting. "I don't see how gun control could have prevented that shooting unless you take guns out of the hands of ...
