All-knowing surveillance system detects gunfire all across America
Post Date: 2017-03-06 20:43:11 by cranky
Are those lamps on your local streets detecting when guns are fired? American cities are being upgraded to pinpoint shooters and help police fight gun violence. Like something out of the futuristic policing TV show APB, new tech can locate the exact position where a gun is fired and report it immediately to law enforcement. Called ShotSpotter, this is a tool that can be used by officials to respond even faster to the aid of gun violence victims minutes can be the difference between life and death. And it provides police with far more information in advance. Before arriving on the scene, the tech tells police the exact location of the shooter or shooters, the type of ...
Can a Gun Shoot Itself?
Post Date: 2017-03-02 16:31:11 by hondo68
Mar 2, 2017Gun control advocates routinely act as if firearms are inherently violent, rather than being inert, morally neutral tools that can be employed for either benign or malevolent purposes. Strangely enough, this fallacy is also commonly found in official reports from law enforcement agencies of incidents involving irresponsible firearms use by officers and media outlets generally retail those official statements without critical commentary. The Tulsa World newspaper recently republished a statement from the Wagoner County, Oklahoma Sheriffs Office describing how two citizens suffered minor injuries at a local restaurant when a reserve deputys firearm supposedly ...

The NRA's Unheralded Role in 2016
Post Date: 2017-03-02 13:41:19 by Tooconservative
There are many claimants to the honor of having nudged Donald Trump over the top in the presidential election. But the folks with the best case are the National Rifle Association and the consultants who made their TV ads. The NRA did just about everything right. It endorsed Trump last May when he was still just the de facto nominee. The goal was to persuade Second Amendment supporters whod backed other candidates to unify behind him. The NRA planned ahead. It had lined up TV time months beforehand when rates were lower. That saved money. Thus when the Access Hollywood tape threatened to capsize the Trump campaign a month before the election, the NRA had cash on hand for a fresh ad ...
Is Gun Ownership a Right?
Post Date: 2017-02-27 09:33:06 by misterwhite
(Video at link. Transcript follows.)Does an American citizen have a Constitutional right to own a gun? Here's what the Second Amendment says: "A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Now, it once seemed to me like that language only protected state militias and not individuals. Indeed, this is the view held by the four dissenting Supreme Court justices in the 2008 case of District of Columbia versus Heller, a landmark case dealing with gun ownership. But the more research I did, the more I came to realize that my initial view was mistaken and that the Founders were, in ...
4th Circuit Upholds Maryland's 'Assault Weapon' Ban
Post Date: 2017-02-22 21:04:53 by hondo68
The appeals court says the prohibited guns and magazines are outside the scope of the Second Amendment. Connecticut State Police Yesterday a federal appeals court upheld Maryland's ban on so-called assault weapons, saying ownership of such guns is "not protected by the Second Amendment." The decision, by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, overturned a 2016 ruling by a three-judge panel of the same court that said Maryland's law should be subject to "strict scrutiny" because it imposes a "substantial burden" on the right to keep and bear arms. Maryland's "assault weapon" ban, which it expanded after the 2012 massacre at Sandy ...

Gun Sales Dip in January as Trump Takes Office
Post Date: 2017-02-06 00:46:05 by Tooconservative
The number of gun-related background checks performed by the FBI in January were down significantly from the record number from last January. The FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS, processed 2,043,184 gun-related checks through January 2017, records released on Friday show. That's more than 500,000 fewer checks than the record set the year before. It comes on the heels of a streak that saw 18-straight months of new monthly records, and two new yearly records as well. January's total still saw the third most checks for any January going back to 1998 despite its drop off from record-setting pace. NICS checks are widely considered the most accurate ...
Judge Neil Gorsuch: Some Cause for Concern (Stop & Frisk, Disarm) [Full Thread]
Post Date: 2017-02-03 15:21:48 by hondo68
In recent days, news outlets have been reporting that 10th Circuit judge Neil Gorsuch has now risen to the top of President Trump's list of potential Supreme Court nominees. He apparently replaces Judge William Pryor, who was widely reported as previously leading the pack of potential nominees. Judge Pryor faced significant backlash from many on the right, including Evangelical Christians, criticizing Pryor's apparent support of the radical homosexual and transgender agenda. The danger in being the front runner for a spot on the High Court is that you receive intense scrutiny, and, as with most candidates, Judge Gorsuch is difficult to evaluate fully. Having spent ...
Obama's final shot: Ban on 'traditional (lead) ammo'
Post Date: 2017-01-23 18:10:24 by hondo68
In its final attack on gun owners, the Obama administration moved to ban traditional lead ammo on federal grounds and waterways on its last full day in office. The ban, which includes cheap bullets and common fishing tackle, can be repealed by the Trump administration and was immediately condemned as an attack on outdoors people and rural life. "This directive is irresponsible and driven not out of sound science but unchecked politics," said Lawrence Keane, senior vice president and general counsel of the National Shooting Sports Foundation. "The timing alone is suspect. This directive was published without dialogue with industry, sportsmen and conservationists. The next ...

Is Donald Trump Going to Take Away Your Gun?
Post Date: 2017-01-02 14:23:52 by Willie Green
Pro-gun Trump vs. anti-gun Trump After all, this is the man who argued all through the 2016 campaignthat he is "a 2nd amendment person," that he is "against gun control," and who even advocated "making all concealed-carry permits valid in every state." Is this really the kind of guy who might take away your gun? Well, it's essential to recognize that Donald Trump has flip-floppedon gun control before -- and could do so again. For example, in his 2000 book The America We Deserve, Trump declared unabashedly: " I support the ban on assault weapons and I support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun." Trump recanted his position on ...

A Public Service
Post Date: 2016-12-19 18:10:45 by tpaine
A Public Service By Dr. Thomas Sowell December 20, 2016 5 Min Read A- A+ Sometimes someone inadvertently performs a public service by bringing an unbelievably stupid and dangerous idea to the surface, where it can be exposed for what it is. The New York Times can be credited if that is the word with performing this public service in a recent editorial against proposals to allow law-abiding citizens to carry concealed guns. They refer to what they call the National Rifle Association's "fantasy that citizens can stand up to gunmen by shooting it out." Nobody has suggested any such thing. Data collected over many years but almost never seeing the ...
Ron Paul: War on ‘Fake News’ Part of a War on Free Speech
Post Date: 2016-12-13 08:54:52 by Deckard
A major threat to liberty is the assault on the right to discuss political issues, seek out alternative information sources, and promote dissenting ideas and causes such as non-interventionism in foreign and domestic affairs. If this ongoing assault on free speech succeeds, then all of our liberties are endangered. One of the most common assaults on the First Amendment is the attempt to force public policy organizations to disclose their donors. Regardless of the intent of these laws, the effect is to subject supporters of controversial causes to harassment, or worse. This harassment makes other potential donors afraid to support organizations opposing a popular war or defending the rights ...

Dear Friend of the Second Amendment: Anti-gun activist David Petraeus is under consideration for the position of Secretary of State in the Trump administration. An AR-15 in Every Home: 3D Gun Printer Cody Wilson on the Right to Resistance, Hacking the Media, and Trump
Post Date: 2016-11-24 05:54:46 by Deckard
"It doesn't matter what the origins of the Second Amendment were," says Cody Wilson, creator of the first 3D-printed gun and author of the new book, Come and Take It: The Gun Printer's Guide to Thinking Free. "With the internet, we can transform this thing into right to resistance on a global scale. If it's just a fact that the government serves guns now, this is just a point of political life." Reason TV visited Wilson at an Austin, Texas-based manufacturing facility of his company Defense Distributed to discuss his new memoir about the creation of first 3D-printed firearm, which he dubbed "The Liberator." Wilson told Reason TV he plans to push ...
Trump's Victory Has Fearful Minorities Buying Up Guns
Post Date: 2016-11-23 14:59:52 by Willie Green
After Donald Trump's win, Yolanda Scott is upgrading the crowbar she keeps in her purse to a small-caliber pistol. Scott, an African-American, is one of many minorities who have been flocking to gun stores to protect themselves, afraid Trump's victory will incite more hate crimes. "You feel that racists now feel like they can attack us just because the president is doing it," one gun shop owner told NBC News. Gun store owners told NBC News that since November 8 they're seeing up to four times as many black and minority customers and black gun groups are reporting double the normal number of attendees at their meetings since the election. Racial tension ...

Alito: SCOTUS conservatives have lots of opportunities once we get Scalias replacement NOVEMBER 19, 2016 BY ED MORRISSEY Now that the election has settled the question of who will appoint the next Supreme Court justice, we have spent a considerable amount of time analyzing who might get Donald Trumps appointment. Perhaps a better way to look at that question will be to recall the context in which it gets made. Earlier this week, Justice Samuel Alito laid out the potential agenda for a court in which an originalist replaces the late Antonin Scalia and reminded the Federalist Society of the bullet conservatives dodged in the election: Justice Samuel Alito on Thursday ...
The Village Rifle

Northern Wisconsin is gun culture country. When I was growing up in the 50's and 60's, everybody had a gun or three in every house. It wasn't always so. The Depression was a hard time for a lot of people. My father managed to snag the Springfield model 84-C during the 1930's. He paid $5 for the rifle and $2.50 for the scope. The rifle will feed Shorts, Longs, and .22 Long Rifle interchangeably through the detachable 5 shot magazine. The scope was an old straight tube 3/4 inch 2 3/4 power. It was state of the art in the 30's. It was a Weaver. As I recall, it was a model 329. Those sold in 1934 for $4.75, with a choice of mounts. The rifle was advertised for $9.70 in ...

The Coming National Gun Ban – and How the States Can Resist
Post Date: 2016-10-12 11:40:32 by Stoner
The law of averages predicts that at some time in the future, perhaps as soon as 2017, the Democratic Party will once again control the White House and majorities in both houses of Congress. When that happens, the next Democratic president -- be it Hillary Clinton or someone else -- will sign into law a sweeping, foreign-style gun ban. The legislation has already been written. H.R. 4269 would enact a national, permanent ban on the manufacture and sale of so-called assault weapons and all firearm magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds. The bill, introduced last December, already has149 Democratic co-sponsors (218 are needed to pass the House). H.R. 4269 would ban all ...
