Navy's Sci-Fi Railgun Breaks Record for Most Powerful Gun On the Planet (VIDEO) BY Philip Caulfield, DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER This image (below) shows the Navy's electromagnetic railgun firing a projectile, the black square, at a world-record setting 33 megajoules. The gun will allow the Navy to strike from more than 100 miles away. Say hello to the Navy's little friend. Navy scientists set a world record Friday during a test of an electromagnetic railgun, a tractor-trailer sized weapon that sends a 20-pound projectile rocketing through the air at seven times the speed of sound. (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - A suspect armed with the machete tried to rob a Route 148 Package and Variety Store in Oakham on Wednesday, but the cashier was able to scare the suspect off with a gun. The robbery happened around 7 p.m. The suspect arrived at the New Mart armed with the machete, demanding cash from the clerk. The storeowner and former part-time police officer pulled out his 9mm Smith and Wesson and scared the man off. Police believe the man later robbed a convenience store in Clinton later that night also using a machete. State and local police have video of the second robbery which is resulting in tips. Brad Taylor points out he has never been robbed in 17 years of doing ...

Scalia takes Kagan to gun range (but not Dick Cheney), sources say

The witnesses saw Scalia at the Fairfax Rod and Gun Club, where he is a member, around noon on Wednesday of last week. He was with a woman who was noticeably diminutive in height, like Kagan, who stands at about five feet three inches. The witnesses, who got a very close look at the pair, say that the woman was the newest Supreme Court Justice. Scalia was bending down in order to teach Kagan how to hold the shotgun, the witnesses say, and the pair were shooting skeet. Kagan, who was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Obama in May and confirmed by the Senate in August, is generally believed to hold negative opinions toward the Second Amendment. The perception is based on a memo ...

Study Ties Lax State Gun Laws to Crimes in Other States (More guns = Less crime)

WASHINGTON — Nearly 600 mayors nationwide, led by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York and other city leaders, are mounting a new campaign to identify states with lax gun laws and push for tighter restrictions to prevent the trafficking of guns used in crimes. A study due to be released this week by a coalition called Mayors Against Illegal Guns uses previously unavailable federal gun data to identify what it says are the states that most often export guns used in crimes across state lines. It concludes that the 10 worst offenders per capita, led by Mississippi, West Virginia and Kentucky, supplied nearly half the 43,000 guns traced to crime scenes in other states last year. The ...

Victor Steen, a 17-year-old high school senior from West Pensacola, Florida, was murdered while riding a bicycle home from a post-Homecoming Game party last October 3rd. His murderer, Jerald Ard, ran him down in an automobile. According to eyewitnesses, Ard dragged the victim a considerable distance, nearly severing his body in half. Ard had endangered other drivers and pedestrians as he veered into the wrong lane and even drove onto a sidewalk in pursuit of Victor, repeatedly attempting to shoot the teenager with a lethal weapon. After he ran down the youngster, Ard tried to cover up his crime by planting a gun on the victim. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Ard is a police ...

Police: 6 dead, 4 wounded in New Mexico Office Shooting Published July 12, 2010 | Associated Press KRQE ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. A gunman opened fire at an Albuquerque fiber optics manufacturer on Monday, killing five people and wounding four others before turning the gun on himself in what police said was a domestic violence dispute. The shooting at Emcore Corp. appeared to involve the 37-year-old gunman's ex-wife or girlfriend, police Chief Ray Schultz said. It was not immediately clear whether she was among the dead, or what caliber weapon he used. Schultz said the gunman was a former employee, but did not release his name. Chaos unfolded as the gunman opened fire, sending ...

Let's Face It, Chicago's Mayor Richard Daley Wants to Ban Guns, All Guns

Let's Face It, Chicago's Mayor Richard Daley Wants to Ban Guns, All Guns By John Lott Published July 11, 2010 | FoxNews.com As always, gun control proponents say they merely want "reasonable" gun control laws. Yet, when listing the actual laws they favor, they go well beyond what most people would possibly consider "reasonable." Just look at the gun bans in Chicago and Washington, D.C. that local politicians and gun control organizations such as the Brady Campaign and the Violence Policy Center have fought to protect. Last Friday, just days after the Supreme Court struck down Chicago's handgun ban, Chicago enacted strict new gun control laws. These new ...

Firearms Sellers, CME Trader Sue Chicago Over Gun Law (Update1) July 07, 2010, 12:44 PM EDT By Andrew M. Harris July 7 (Bloomberg) -- A Chicago Mercantile Exchange trader and three other people have joined with the Illinois Association of Firearms Retailers to sue the city of Chicago over a restrictive gun law passed by its legislators last week. The gun-owning plaintiffs, who include a teacher’s aide and a married couple, claim the new ordinance restricting handgun possession to inside the home and mandating firearms training and permitting is unconstitutional. The measure imposes “new restrictions that have the purpose and effect of preventing plaintiffs and other law- ...

Race cases win gun rights for all Clarence Page July 7, 2010 Lobbyists for gun rights owe black Americans a historical debt of gratitude. The U.S. Supreme Court reminds us of this debt in its recent decision to overturn Chicago's sweeping prohibition against handgun possession. That decision rests on more than the Second Amendment. It also rests on the 14th Amendment, which brought equal protection to freed slaves after the Civil War. How times change. An amendment that helped blacks protect themselves from Ku Klux Klan terrorists now is being used to help protect a black Chicago man from gangbangers. That was why Otis McDonald, 76, said he needed a gun to protect himself from ...

Say it isn’t so. But it is. Thanks to Erick Erickson (Redstate) and Angry White Dude for being all over this, much to the NRA’s chagrin. I’m getting that feeling that I have when dealing with the Repubics (thanks, Mark Levin) in the US Senate. It’s the feeling that there’s something nasty crawling on your skin. My support for the NRA has been on the wane for some years now. Like other members, I’ve seen comments such as “I had a basic membership and they kept harassing me for more funds” and ”I felt like they were no longer supporting the Second Amendment or myself as a gun owner”. There can be no more graphic example of the mood of the country and the state of the economy than this little vignette of my own home community, at least for me. Where I live, I can see the valley below me and a panorama of the hills towards the west from my living room window. In a ‘normal’ year, the lead up to the Fourth of July would be a steadily increasing crescendo of fireworks going off, culminating in a house-shaking, window-rattling finale on the evening of the Fourth. Now, just so we’re all on the same page, pretty obviously I’m not talking about the safe and sane variety of sparklers and fountains. I’m talking about skyrockets and 3 and 4 inch ...

Mayor Daley backs off plan to limit residents to one gun Comments July 1, 2010 By FRAN SPIELMAN City Hall Reporter Mayor Daley today backed off his plan to limit Chicagoans to one handgun — and dropped the idea of requiring liability insurance — in a watered-down replacement to Chicago’s “unenforceable” handgun ban. The mayor’s ordinance — approved by the City Council’s Police Committee and poised for approval by the full council at a special meeting on Friday — was considerably weaker than Daley and top mayoral aides had initially described. » Click to enlarge image Mayor Daley backed off the plan to limit residents to one gun. ...

Handguns on Campus Make Utah Colleges Model After Court Rulings By David Glovin and Oliver Staley - Jul 2, 2010 Students at Utah Valley University and other public colleges in the state are free to carry concealed handguns on campus if they have a permit. Nick Moyes is one of them. “It’s about self-defense, the ability to defend yourself,” said Moyes, 28, a student who brings his Sig Sauer P-226 9mm handgun onto campus in Orem, Utah, every chance he gets. “That’s a God-given right.” Moyes’s pistol-packing privilege has nothing to do with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling June 28 that will likely be used to attack gun laws across the U.S. In 2007, Utah said ...

Supreme Court Gun Rights Decision: A Win or a Setback?

Both sides of the gun rights debate are claiming some degree of victory concerning today's 5-4 Supreme Court decision restraining government limits on gun ownership while also allowing for the possibility of some governmental regulation. The decision did not explicitly strike down a Chicago law banning handguns, though it did seem to set a course for an eventual overturning of the law. The majority opinion, however, also said the decision that local governments are fully subject to the Second Amendment "limits (but by no means eliminates) their ability to devise solutions to social problems that suit local needs and values." The position echoed a decision two years ago ...

Court's Gun Decision An Important Win for Americans Who Want to Defend Themselves By John Lott Published June 28, 2010 | FOXNews.com With another closely decided 5 to 4 decision, the Supreme Court ruled today that state governments are not able to ban most Americans from owning most types of handguns. The court ruled that firearms are "essential for self-defense." The court found that if the Second Amendment indeed protects an individual right to own a gun, the notion that the government can't ban all handguns is the minimum protection the Constitution can offer. Yet, just as with abortion, this is the first of what is likely to be a long string of court decisions. ...

High Court’s Big Ruling For Gun Rights June 28, 2010 - 10:07 AM | by: Lee Ross In its second major ruling on gun rights in three years, the Supreme Court Monday extended the federally protected right to keep and bear arms to all 50 states. The decision will be hailed by gun rights advocates and comes over the opposition of gun control groups, the city of Chicago and four justices. Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the five justice majority saying "the right to keep and bear arms must be regarded as a substantive guarantee, not a prohibition that could be ignored so long as the States legislated in an evenhanded manner." The ruling builds upon the Court's 2008 decision in ...

In Debate Over Gun-Carry Laws, Critics Are Quick to Shoot Down the Facts By John Lott Published June 24, 2010 | FOXNews.com People walking the streets armed with guns must be dangerous, right? A newly revised study by the Brady Campaign and the Violence Policy Center found that even those individuals who have legally obtained permits to carry concealed handguns are extremely dangerous. With millions of Americans already having been issued such permits from the various states, this is an important issue. The gun control organizations have frequently made these claims in the press, and Dennis Henigan, the vice president of the Brady Campaign, will likely make these claims again when he ...

Obama's gun run If the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Chicago's handgun ban, naturally you might expect a rise in the sale of firearms and ammunition. Except that's already happened — nationwide. The election of Barack Obama ushered in boom times for gun manufacturers, which only now show signs of abating. Industry revenues have shot up an average of 6.9 percent annually since 2005, including a robust 8.9 percent jump in 2009 — Obama's first year in office. Smith & Wesson must love it when Democrats win the White House. President Bill Clinton became known as the industry's "salesman-in-chief" during a tenure marked by the federal ...

And yet last week Derrick Bird shot and killed 12 people and wounded 11 others. A headline in The Times of London read: "Toughest laws in the world could not stop Cumbria tragedy." Multiple victim public shootings were assumed to be an American thing for it is here the guns are, right? No, not at all. Contrary to public perception, Western Europe, where most countries have much tougher gun laws, has experienced many of the worst multiple victim ...

Gregory Kane: Mayor Daley is wounding gun control advocacy By: Gregory Kane Examiner Staff Writer June 7, 2010 America's gun control proponents might want to consider shooting (pun intended) this memo to Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley. "Dear Mayor Daley: Please shut up. You ain't helping us." Is there anyone doing more damage against advocates of gun control than Daley? The man is a walking billboard for right-to-carry laws. Anyone needing proof of that might want to read the statements he made in the wake of an 80-year-old Chicago man fatally shooting a career criminal who invaded his home. The background story goes like this. The elderly man is a Korean War veteran ...

The True Story of Israel's attack on an American Intelligence Ship Imagine all the earthquakes in the world, and all the thunder and lightnings together in a space of two miles, all going off at once.         --Description by unknown U.S. Army officer of night engagement when Farragut ran Fort Jackson and St. Philip, April 24, 1862 Searing heat and terrible noise came suddenly from everywhere. Instinctively I turned sideways, presenting the smallest target to the heat. Heat came first, and it was heat--not cannon fire--that caused me to turn away. It was too soon to be aware of rockets or cannon fire. "We're shooting!" I ...

Asked about the possibility of charges, the mayor ended a news conference he had called about summer curfew in the city. "I don't know.
