Attack of the Monsanto Superinsects
Post Date: 2011-09-06 14:05:49 by lucysmom

Over the past decade and a half, as Monsanto built up its globe-spanning, multi-billion-dollar genetically modified seed empire, it made two major pitches to farmers. The first involved weeds. Leave the weed management to us, Monsanto insisted. We've engineered plants that can survive our very own herbicide. Just pay up for our patented, premium-priced seeds, spray your fields with our Roundup herbicide whenever the fancy strikes, and—voilà!—no more weeds. The second involved crop-eating insects. We've isolated the toxic gene of a commonly used bacterial pesticide called Bt, Monsanto announced, and spliced it directly into crops. Along with corn and soy, you will ...

HARPS tunes in on habitable planet

Using the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS), a team of scientists at University of Geneva, Switzerland, led by the Swiss astronomer Stephane Udry made a sound discovery… an Earth-like planet orbiting star HD 85512. Located about 36 light years away in the constellation of Vela, this extrasolar planet is one of the smallest to be documented in the "habitable zone" and could very well be a potential home to living organisms. Circling its parent star every 54 days at about the quarter of the distance which Earth orbits the Sun, the newly discovered planet shows every sign of a temperate climate and a possibility of water. However, the rocky little world ...

On Being Governed By Scientific Frauds [Full Thread]

On Being Governed By Scientific Frauds By James Lewis The news leaked out a while ago that Al Gore scored a D in natural science at Harvard. That would be the science introduction for Other Majors, not difficult chemistry or calculus. So Nobel Laureate Al Gore got a D in Science for Dummies. But don't worry. Anybody can blow a college course and still bounce back. A lot of us get it wrong the first time. Unfortunately, Al Gore didn't fix his failure. He made it much worse by peddling monstrous pseudo-science and getting even richer from it. As well as repulsively fat -- a walking metaphor for his politics. The more I think about it, the more it looks like global warming is a ...

Technology Keeping Internet Freedom Ahead of Censorship
Post Date: 2011-08-25 09:08:57 by Capitalist Eric

Efforts by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) to regulate the Internet may become irrelevant if the new technology being developed succeeds as expected. When the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled against the FCC last December, the FCC rewrote its rules to allow them to regulate the Internet anyway through the whitewash called “net neutrality.” Verizon immediately filed suit to overrule the new attempt, and a House subcommittee in March voted to invalidate the actions of the FCC. But the new rules remain in place until the issue is decided. All of which may be irrelevant as new technology, called Telex, is being developed as a “work-around” ...

Godspeed Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs resigned from Apple today. Although the reason wasn't announced, the speculation is that his liver cancer has reemerged. Steve Jobs started Apple with nothing but a good idea and a partner. Starting with nothing but this, he helped revolutionize the world. Bill Gates started under similar circumstances. He also helped revolutionize the world. Gates had the early corporate wins, but Jobs persisted in his consumer focus with the belief that style matters. In the end they both won. But Jobs was became much more important to our consumer-oriented culture with the iPod, iPhone, and iPad than Gates and Microsoft could imagine. Godspeed Steve Jobs -- one of the few true heroes ...

How to See Mars & Moon Together Thursday Morning

The planet Mars currently appears rather dull and uninteresting in the night sky, yet it is also drawing nearer to us with each passing day. As we noted last month, 2011 is an "off year" for the fabled Red Planet, since it does not come to opposition — that point in the sky placing it opposite to the sun. Having only emerged from the glare of the rising sun during June, Mars is now visible in a dark sky, rising this week shortly before 2:30 a.m. local time. And during the predawn hours of Thursday (Aug. 25), Mars will have a visitor: a slender waning crescent moon that will appear to rise side-by-side with Mars from beyond the east-northeast horizon. The pair will be ...

Chris Christie: ‘Climate Change Is Real’

Add another prominent figure to the short list of Republicans believing in climate change . According to the New Jersey Star-Ledger, governor Chris Christie joined Presidential candidate Jon Hunstman in coming out in full support of the issue. "Climate change is real," Christie told reporters. "Human activity plays a role in these changes, and it is impacting our state." Christie, a huge favorite among the Tea Party and other right wing groups, was a major skeptic of climate change as of last year. But after attending a conference of environmentalists in May, the Garden State top executive began to adopt a viewpoint still very unpopular in conservative circles, leading ...

Aliens May Destroy Humanity To Protect Other Civilisations, Say Scientists

When they see what a mess we've made of our planet, aliens may be forced to take drastic action. Photograph: PR It may not rank as the most compelling reason to curb greenhouse gases, but reducing our emissions might just save humanity from a pre-emptive alien attack, scientists claim. Watching from afar, extraterrestrial beings might view changes in Earth's atmosphere as symptomatic of a civilisation growing out of control – and take drastic action to keep us from becoming a more serious threat, the researchers explain. This highly speculative scenario is one of several described by scientists at Nasa and Pennsylvania State University that, while considered unlikely, they ...

IBM unveils chips that mimic the human brain

IBM has unveiled a new experimental computer chip that it says mimics the human brain in that it perceives, acts and even thinks. It terms the machines built with these chips "cognitive computers", claiming that they are able to learn through experience, find patterns, generate ideas and understand the outcomes. In building this new generation of chip, IBM combined principles of nanoscience, neuroscience and supercomputing. It has been awarded $21m (£12.7m) of new funding by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for the next phase of the project, which it terms "Systems of Neuromorphic Adaptive Plastic Scalable Electronics" (SyNAPSE). "This is ...

Google to buy Motorola's Mobile Handset Business

I'm sitting at HTC in Taipei, contemplating Google's announced intention to purchase Motorola's handset business. I think it's probably a mistake. Apple is the only company that makes iPhones, RIM is the only company that makes Blackberrys and HP is only company that makes Palm WebOS phones. Android has been phenomenally successful -- selling 48% of the smartphones worldwide last quarter to Apple's 19% -- because Google doesn't complete in the handset market with the vendors who are using Android. Google claims that the purchase could make the Android eco-system stronger. However, if Google starts making their own handsets, HTC, Samsung, LG, Sony Erickson, and ...

Era of the PC 'coming to a close'

PCs are going the way of typewriters, vinyl records and vacuum tubes, one of the engineers who worked on the original machine has said. The claim was made in a blog post commemorating 30 years since the launch of the first IBM personal computer. No longer, said Dr Mark Dean, are PCs the leading edge of computing. No single device has taken the PC's place, he said, instead it has been replaced by the socially-mediated innovation it has fostered. While IBM was not the first to produce a personal computer, the launch of the 5150 on 12 August 1981 established standards and a design around which many desktop machines have since been built. LOS ANGELES -- The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency says contact with its experimental hypersonic glider was lost after launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base on the central California coast. The agency says in Twitter postings that its unmanned Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle-2 was launched Thursday atop a rocket, successfully separated from the booster and entered the mission's glide phase. The agency says telemetry was subsequently lost, but released no details.. A similar vehicle was launched last year and returned nine minutes of data before contact was prematurely lost. The small aircraft is supposed to maneuver through the atmosphere at 13,000 mph before ...

Scientists and weather analysts are predicting that solar flares caused by geomagnetic storms could disrupt telecommunications, satellite and electric equipment this week. With the sun set to reach the maximum of its 11-year cycle this year, this is increasing the frequency of solar flares that spark aurorae displays similar to the aurora borealis one sees in the northern latitudes such as Alaska, northern Scandinavia, parts of Canada, Russia and the Arctic. The Bone Destroying Daily Drink Fooling Millions of Americans

Two new North American studies investigated the impact of low-level fluoride consumption on the strength and density of bone. While these important (yet largely overlooked) studies are not slam-dunks, they provide some of the strongest evidence to date that low-level fluoride exposure alters the quality of bone tissue, and strengthen concerns that fluoride exposure may increase the rate of bone fracture in the population. Skeletal Fluorosis—A Real Danger of Excessive Fluoride Consumption The harmful effects of chronic fluoride exposure on bone are well established. Since the 1930s it has been known that fluoride intake causes excessive bone growth, which can result in joint pain, ...

Happy 20th birthday, World Wide Web!

Happy birthday, Web! On August 6, 1991--20 years ago--Tim Berners-Lee posted a summary of a project for organizing information on a computer network using a "web" of hyperlinks: the "WorldWideWeb," or W3. At the same time, the W3 made its debut as a publicly available service on the Internet. Now, as the Web turns 20, those of us here at CNET and sister site CBS News.com are giving it a big thank you for revolutionizing the world as we know it. There have been some definite downsides to the Web, such as online predation and a reduction in privacy, but the good has far outweighed the bad. Web companies have created millions of jobs across the globe, opened people up to ...

No, new data does not “blow a gaping hole in global warming alarmism”

I received a few emails, tweets, and comments on the blog yesterday asking about an Op/Ed article in Forbes magazine that claims that new NASA data will "blow [a] gaping hole in global warming alarmism". Except, as it turns out, not so much. The article is just so much hot air (see what I did there?) and climate scientists say the paper on which it’s based is fundamentally flawed and flat-out wrong. It’s clear after reading just a few words that this article is hugely biased. The use of the word "alarmist" and its variants appeared no fewer than 14 times, 16 if you include the picture caption and the headline. The word "alarmist" is pretty clearly ...

New NASA Data Blow Gaping Hole In Global Warming Alarmism

NASA satellite data from the years 2000 through 2011 show the Earth's atmosphere is allowing far more heat to be released into space than alarmist computer models have predicted, reports a new study in the peer-reviewed science journal Remote Sensing. The study indicates far less future global warming will occur than United Nations computer models have predicted, and supports prior studies indicating increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide trap far less heat than alarmists have claimed. Study co-author Dr. Roy Spencer, a principal research scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and U.S. Science Team Leader for the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer flying on ...

And Birch bark — a visit to the Early Buddhist Manuscripts Research Project in the palaeographic laboratories at the University of Washington. Scent, script and scripture, story and history: mystery from the ancient forests. How could these be possibly aligned? The story deepens still… Sometime back, a couple of years ago, I was traveling in Firenze, along with Dawn Clark, Karen Dubin, Karen Adams and a team from the Sniffapalooza crowd. Meandering back into the recesses of the shelves of profumi, old shops, apothecaries and farmeceutica, expert noses and fragrance makers, I ...

Fingerprint Analysis Tech Aims To Revolutionize Drug Testing

A new technology that analyzes the sweat from a person's fingertips looks to revolutionize the drug testing market, providing on-site results in minutes with a test so advanced it can even detect marijuana intoxication. Using gold nanoparticles and special antibodies, the tech produced by British firm Intelligent Fingerprinting latches on to metabolites on the fingerprint and turns a specific color depending on which drug byproducts are detected. While it can be configured to search for drugs like nicotine, methadone and cocaine, it also presents another innovation: helping to determine if someone is actively intoxicated on marijuana. Marijuana's psychoactive ingredient is fat ...

I think that there are many species in universe. We are destined to either destroy ourselves or travel to other planets and dimensions. I think it is imperative that our govt develop our technology so that those of us that want to leave this world can go and seek better opportunities and more happiness. There is way to much fiction in this world for us in the know to be able to coexist with these people on this planet and their ancient superstitions. We need to encourage Obama to turn Nasa's attention to the development of a warp drive. It would be well worth the effort. When the warp drive is developed we will leave this world and no zionists will be allowed to come.

Scientists Unveil New Tools for Rewriting the Code of Life
Post Date: 2011-07-15 15:15:46 by jwpegler

The power to edit genes is as revolutionary, immediately useful and unlimited in its potential as was Johannes Gutenberg's printing press. And like Gutenberg's invention, most DNA editing tools are slow, expensive, and hard to use -- a brilliant technology in its infancy. Now, Harvard researchers developing genome- scale editing tools as fast and easy as word processing have rewritten the genome of living cells using the genetic equivalent of search and replace -- and combined those rewrites in novel cell strains, strikingly different from their forebears. "The payoff doesn't really come from making a copy of something that already exists," said George Church, a ...

China’s ‘Eye-In-The-Sky’ Nears Par With US

China’s rapidly expanding satellite programme could alter power dynamics in Asia and reduce the US military’s scope for operations in the region, according to new research. Chinese reconnaissance satellites can now monitor targets for up to six hours a day, the World Security Institute, a Washington think-tank, has concluded in a new report. The People’s Liberation Army, which could only manage three hours of daily coverage just 18 months ago, is now nearly on a par with the US military in its ability to monitor fixed targets, according to the findings. “Starting from almost no live surveillance capability 10 years ago, today the PLA has likely equalled the US’s ...
