You Will Be Baptized with the Holy Spirit

“And while staying with them he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, ‘You heard from me, for John baptized with water, but before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’” (Acts 1:4–5) We saw last week from verse 1 that the first volume of Luke’s two- volume work, the Gospel according to Luke, dealt with all that Jesus BEGAN to do and to teach (Acts 1:1), which implies that the second volume, the book of Acts, will deal with what Jesus CONTINUES to do and to teach. The book of Acts is not only the acts of the apostles, but the acts of the risen, living Jesus. Then we noticed that ...

What Jesus Did After the Beginning

In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. To them he presented himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days, and speaking of the kingdom of God. I am glad that God puts it in the heart of some doctors to do more than medicine. Every doctor I know in this church has dreams bigger than mending bodies and making bucks. I thank God for that. But the doctor I am most thankful for in all the world is the doctor called Luke. In Colossians 4:14 Paul calls him "the beloved ...

The Origins of the King James Bible [Full Thread]

A handwritten draft of the world's most famous bible has been discovered in England When an archive yields an unexpected discovery, it's usually cause for celebration. But when that discovery involves the world's most famous bible, scholarly excitement mounts to ecstastic levels. The earliest known draft of the King James Bible has been unearthed at the University of Cambridge, writes Jennifer Schuessler for The New York Times, and it’s being lauded as a critical find for historians. The draft was discovered by Jeffrey Alan Miller, an American scholar conduct in the Cambridge archives. It contains the handwriting of dozens of authors, ...

With Russian & Iranian forces now engaged in combat in Syria, people are asking, “What is the War of Gog & Magog?” Here’s the answer, Part One.

(Istanbul, Turkey) — With Russian and Iranian military forces now cooperating together and engaging in combat in Syria, just miles north of the border of Israel, people are asking me a lot of questions. Among them: •Is there any significance to these developments in light of Bible prophecy? •Do these events have anything to do with the prophecies found in Ezekiel 38 & 39? •Are recent events setting the stage for the fulfillment of what Bible scholars call the “War of Gog & Magog” that is supposed to take place in the End of Days? Last Friday night, I addressed the topic of Apocalyptic Islam at a conference in Toronto, looking at how Shia and Sunni ...

Instead of “What would Jesus do?” how about

Tuesday, October 6, 2015 Instead of “What would Jesus do?” how about “What would king David do?” All to often I hear men, especially men who profess to be both Christians and Patriots saying “What would Jesus do?” There is a major problem with that question, the problem is this: Jesus is God Almighty, you are not. You are a man, a creation, not God. So, let me suggest a better, a more appropriate question for you to ask yourself when dealing with a crossroads, a problem, a decision. What would King David do. What would King David do to the members of the US Supreme Court? What would King David do to the corrupt US Congress? What would King David do to the ...

Moses Was Tripping, And Other Scientific Explanations For Biblical Miracles

God appears to Moses as a burning bush, as depicted by Eugène Pluchart in 1848. (Image: Hazhk/WikiCommons Public Domain) Thomas Jefferson was a great fan of Jesus. The author of the Declaration of Independence called the Son of God “the greatest of all the Reformers," a font of "eloquence and fine imagination," and the author of "a system of the most sublime morality which has ever fallen from the lips of man." He wrote of him often, and tried to keep his teachings in mind. But there was one catch—Jefferson didn't think Jesus was the son of God. Indeed, he didn’t believe in miracles at all. So for a couple of evenings in February of 1804, ...

Letter to Pope Francis -- It is not a miracle that 575 of us in Milwaukee came forward [Full Thread]

September 23, 2015 Pope Francis Apostolic Palace 00120 Vatican City Dear Pope Francis, I am one of 575 victims of childhood rape, sexual assault or abuse by clergy who have worked in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee who have filed cases seeking restitution from the church in US Federal Bankruptcy Court. I am writing to you on our behalf and on behalf of our families. Every rape or sexual assault of a child is a double act of theft: first it steals the body and then it steals the voice. Seeking justice as adults through our courts for the crimes that were committed against us as children is an effort by us to restore both body and voice. That is why we were cheered when, early in your ...

The two most important things in our holy religion are the life of faith and the walk of faith. He who shall rightly understand these is not far from being a master in experimental theology, for they are vital points to a Christian. You will never find true faith unattended by true godliness; on the other hand, you will never discover a truly holy life which has not for its root a living faith upon the righteousness of Christ. Woe unto those who seek after the one without the other! There are some who cultivate faith and forget holiness; these may be very high in orthodoxy, but they shall be very deep in condemnation, for they hold the truth in unrighteousness; and there are others who ...

Fuller Seminary Takes a Stand

Fuller Seminary decided not to offer tenure to a New Testament professor, J. R. Daniel Kirk, whose view of marriage does not comport with Jesus’s view. Although a decision such as this is never made happily or easily, I am grateful for the courage of senior faculty at Fuller Seminary in asserting the importance of a stance on sexual ethics that Jesus clearly regarded as foundational: a male-female requirement for sexual relations (Mark 10:2-12; Matt 19:3-9). Had Fuller set a precedent of embracing faculty whose position toward sexual ethics was so at odds with Jesus’s own, it would soon have ceased to be an evangelical institution. For an account of what happened, we have to ...

Essenes ESSENES s’ enz (•Ã÷½¿¹, •Ãñ¹B¿¹). A Jewish religious group which flourished in the 1st cent. b.c. and the 1st cent. a.d., and which formed the third important school of thought in the time of Christ (with the Pharisees and the Sadducees). Outline 1. Name. The meaning of the name has been much debated. The E Aram. term hssyâ, “pious” has been suggested as a possible origin, while other derivations have been seen in terms of the Gr. ¿ù¿Â, G4008, “holy,” ¹ÿÂ, ...

How long will it be ere they believe me? —Numbers 14:11 Strive with all diligence to keep out that monster unbelief. It so dishonours Christ, that He will withdraw His visible presence if we insult Him by indulging it. It is true it is a weed, the seeds of which we can never entirely extract from the soil, but we must aim at its root with zeal and perseverance. Among hateful things it is the most to be abhorred. Its injurious nature is so venomous that he that exerciseth it and he upon whom it is exercised are both hurt thereby. In thy case, O believer! it is most wicked, for the mercies of thy Lord in the past, increase thy guilt in doubting Him now. When thou dost distrust the ...

The Tale of Two Sons Luke 15:11-32 March 10, 2006 The text before us, like so many texts, a very familiar text and yet there are so many unfamiliar elements to it, and that's the genius of our Lord as a teacher. Anybody who knows this story knows the story that we call the story of the Prodigal Son. You might be interested to know that it has been considered by some people, no less that Charles Dickens, the greatest short story ever written. Also by Ralph Waldo Emerson, the greatest short story ever written. Now that makes you think about...what am I missing? Is there something there that I haven't seen? And there really is. To get us into the story a little bit, I just want to ...

"The sweet psalmist of Israel." — 2 Samuel 23:1

The sweet psalmist of Israel. —2 Samuel 23:1 Among all the saints whose lives are recorded in Holy Writ, David possesses an experience of the most striking, varied, and instructive character. In his history we meet with trials and temptations not to be discovered, as a whole, in other saints of ancient times, and hence he is all the more suggestive a type of our Lord. David knew the trials of all ranks and conditions of men. Kings have their troubles, and David wore a crown: the peasant has his cares, and David handled a shepherd's crook: the wanderer has many hardships, and David abode in the caves of Engedi: the captain has his difficulties, and David found the sons of Zeruiah ...

We All Will Be Surprised On Judgment Day

A lot of people are going to be surprised on judgment day. Because the things they do to believers they are really doing to Jesus himself personally. Everything from ISIS beheading Christians to North Koreans abusing believers in prison camps to that person at work who makes fun of you because of your faith. They’re not hurting mere humans, but everything they do they’re doing to Jesus himself, As Saul found out. “But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. The Roman Governor Who Fulfilled Prophecy (NOT Pontius Pilate)

About twenty years or so before Pontius Pilate assumed control of Judea, a procurator by the name of Caponius was installed by Rome. The year was 6 AD. His governorship would set in motion the fulfillment of one of the most important predictions found in the Bible. To understand this, we need to go back to an event that took place 1850 years or so before the birth of Christ. As Jacob’s life was drawing to a close, he called together his twelve sons. He provides one of the most important prophecies of Scripture. As recorded in Genesis 49, the patriarch tells his sons what would befall them (or more specifically, what would happen to their descendants) as history progressed. Each son ...

Insanity Defense

At the end of a rather long day, I swung by Neil Cavuto's show on Fox News and was perhaps rather blunt about the current state of both the Republican and Democrat races. First, the Republican presidential campaign. Rand Paul calls the commanding lead of Donald Trump "temporary insanity" on the part of the voters: Steyn stated, "Rand Paul says this is temporary insanity on the part of whatever it is, 20-something percent of the Republican base. I think it was Einstein who said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and over again, and expecting a different result. And the base supported the Republican Party establishment, delivered them a huge victory in 20 ...

Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Initiative—More Anti-White Blaxploitation By The “Talented Tenth”

Roger Scruton once observed that the reason Cultural Marxism holds such enormous appeal for our ruling elites is not because it is philosophically true, but because it confers on them the power to manipulate others and reconfigure the social order. This—and nothing less than this—is the driving force behind President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative to “mentor” young black males. To the untrained eye, My Brother’s Keeper gatherings held at the White House and elsewhere seem harmless enough. President Obama stands up and gives a windy speech about policing and social justice, packaged in such a way that does not directly assail whites. Participants ...

What Is Sin? The Essence and Root of All Sinning

Why are we spending an entire pastors’ conference talking about sin? Let me give you just one glimpse into why I suggested to the team last summer that we focus on sin. I was reading Stephen Westerholm’s new book, Justification Reconsidered; and I was deeply moved by chapters two and three where he focuses on the relationship between Paul’s view of sin and the doctrine of justification. Westerholm is dealing with the New Perspective on Paul, a movement among New Testament Scholars in the last fifty years that goes something like this: For the last five hundred years or more, the church — Protestants in particular — has misunderstood what the Judaism of the first ...

We are cursed, as the Chinese say, to live in "interesting times", about which there is much to say - the Iran deal, for example, or the Allaku Akbar guy running amok in Chattanooga. Yet the dead sloth that is the Republican Party has finally roused itself to spend the last 48 hours hammering Donald Trump for impugning the honor of John McCain. As his criminal-immigrant surge demonstrates, Trump's support comes almost entirely from Americans who feel the political class passes its time talking about nothing that matters to them. So feel free to spend the weekend talking about John McCain. QED, as Trump is unlikely to say. On the matter of McCain, in June 1998 the Senator ...

A rally for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) drew about 300 supporters in deeply conservative Alabama – including one woman who has never voted in 22 years of eligibility. The event for the Vermont independent, who is running for president as a Democrat, happened Sunday at the Good People Brewing Company in Birmingham, reported AL.com. One of the those supporters was 40-year-old Elizabeth Hewitt, of Blount County, who said she has never felt like her vote mattered because she never heard a candidate’s message that resonated with her until Sanders. “I didn’t like either candidate,” she told the newspaper. “I didn’t care who won because I felt it didn’t ...

Wednesday, July 15, 2015"For many are called, but few chosen."Matthew 22:14 What did Jesus mean? What was He telling us when He said, "For many are called, but few chosen."? If you, as a Christian man have learned anything from the misuse of "Judge not, that ye may not be judged," Matthew 7:1 and "Lord, behold, here are two swords." And He said unto them, "It is enough". You should have learned that one of the most important keys to understanding Scripture is Context, Context, Context. For looking at "For many are called, but few chosen." all alone is not going to give you context, it is instead going to either leave you ...

Many people don't believe in the Rapture of the Christian Church, or even know just what the Church is. There are many differing opinions on all phases of the End Times. The only valid opinions come from what we read in the Holy Bible. I will post an article tomorrow that doesn't skimp on references giving chapter and verse. I believe in the Pre-Tribulation Rapture of the Church. More on that tomorrow.

Do You Heap Burning Coals on Your Enemy’s Head?

Taken out of context from the Bible, the question seems rather odd. On face value, heaping burning coals on the head of anyone, friend or foe, see just downright un-Christian. But that is what we read in the Book of Romans 12:20b “… you will heap burning coals on his head.” Indeed, we are encouraged to do this very thing, something that no matter how we look at it, conjures up negative images. The question is, what does this phrase mean? Where does it come from? Before we begin to look at the phrase in detail, let us first look to God so that we set our understanding on the firm foundation of Who and What God is, for the phrase is found in the Holy Bible, which is the very ...
